Is it a dating scam or could this be real?

There’s a sucker born every minute, as the saying goes.

socalgirl1689 :  I’m with you, but some women are not as intelligent or as wary as they should be. They aren’t in touch with their intuition. Add in loneliness and you have the perfect storm for a scam artist/grifter. I’m sorry your friend got scammed OP, but she really acted foolishly. I would be afraid she’s going to fall for something like that again, she’s an easy mark.

Water Melon :  I hope she didn’t arrive home to find her home had been robbed while he knew that she was flying across the country. I hope she has learned something from this and will be more cautious in the future.

I can’t believe she flew cross-country on Thanksgiving weekend to meet this guy. 🤔 I agree with PPs that she must have been in deeper with him than she let on to you.

In any case, I’m glad she’s realizing the truth about the situation and I hope she doesn’t get sucked back in.

Even if it’s not a scam, allowing someone you supposedly “love” to fly across the country to see you and not bothering to show up, along with not picking up the phone, is just something an a**hole would do. Either way your friend dodged a bullet.

I asked her last night if he ever asked her for money and she said no.”

Did you ask if she sent anything of her own free will, without being asked directly? Two different things.

You guys, wait. How is no one concerned about the guy? Where is he? Something must have happened to him he could be in the hospital for bandaid surgery again! Lol. Jk..seriously though, Any updates?

Btw, this emergency surgery thing is something I have heard before. Used by scammers or married guys.

PS they absolutely wear gowns in hospitals In Asia. i was in the Peace Corps in a developing country where medical care was, I mean this as respectfully as possible, not comparable to Western medical care in terms of sanitation standards, and even there no MD would touch a patient’s cell phone or let them wear street clothes after surgery. If he was in Japan or Korea or somewhere developed like that, then his story is absolutely outrageous. They have equivalent or better medical care there than in the US.
