Is it crazy to plan a Flathead Lake wedding during fire season?

Sorry I’m not local, but I live in a heavy fire area. My best friend had her wedding during fire season in California. Her bridal shower was evacuated and the venue was evacuated a couple weeks before her wedding (we’ve had bad fires the past couple years.) But her wedding was perfect, clear, beautiful, no smoke. There were babies and toddlers there and no one complained of air quality. I guess no matter where you get married there are going to be risks if it’s outside. I’m from the Midwest and all the weddings I’ve been to back home always had the risk of rain. I’m not familiar with Fire season in Montana or how quickly the smoke clears, but is September still very risky? It sounds like a beautiful wedding location. 🙂

However though I should add, there were some other fires last year that had poor air quality lingering. You could smell the smoke. So her wedding might have been an exception.

beehappy2020 :  My husband is from the Flathead valley.  We went up there a couple years ago in late August to visit family and go backpacking in Glacier.  The first day was great, and then a fire blew up and the visibility / air quality was horrendous.  It was red flag alert on air quality, children and the elderly and anyone with respiratory issues were advised not to go outside.  You couldn’t see further than a few hundred meters due to the smokiness.  It stayed that way for a solid 4-5 weeks, if I recall.

It’s a pretty common phenomenon in late summer / early fall.  Just be prepared that you have probably more than a 50% chance of it being smokey, low visibility, not great air quality….

Midsummer has a lot better odds of being smoke free!
