The garters are really odd…

My mother pretty much let me wear whatever I wanted.. but I would never wear those, even when I was in high school and had a killer bod.

@allyfally:  Yikes! Those we not to my taste at all!

Prom(or grad, as we call it in Canada) is our one event at that age where we get to wear a ball gown! Why on earth would anyone want to make it more club appropriate. That is awful.

My mom wouldn’t have said a word, but I would NEVER have chosen a dress with cut outs. Yuck!

I went to a black tie (sports) banquet with Darling Husband recently and was blown away by the dresses a lot of the younger girls (other players dates) were wearing. Short/tight/cleavage/lotsa skin all in one dress! With stilettos! Dresses that were CLEARLY for clubbing. I think it’s totally cool to have one or two of those features in your outfit, but all of them at the same time is too much.

(I’m not that old either, at 27. These girls were mostly in the 18-20 range.) I gave them a pass though, remembering that I didn’t really own (couldn’t afford) any classy threads at that age. But if you’re buying a dress specifically for the event, no excuses!

I love in a college town and I’m always so appalled at what the girls are walking around in here. I mean…in college you should know better and start presenting yourself as an adult. Hey to each their own but I like to leave things to imagination.

@ceebree:  I LOVE that silver dress! Where did you find it?

My grad dress in 2000 had a somewhat high slit up the side of it, but I really wanted to be different from all of the cupcake cinderella ball gowns all of my classmates had on. I didn’t have any cleave showing so it looked great!

I’ve lived in Canada and the US, and the tighter, cut out dresses with garters are for sure more of an American thing (I grew up in Canada, went to university in the US, and taught in both countries) In both states I’ve lived in, the high school girls wear garters that match their dress. I’ve seen zebra print and peacock and even all rhinestoned. I don’t get it at all.

Where as the Canadian girls are still mostly wearing ball gowns, and haven’t picked up the garter thing yet. But I suspect that will happen soon.

I attended “prom” (grad in Canada) between 06 and 09, and have been to two as a teacher, and I’ve seen trends leaning towards sequins, feathers, bold patterns and details like ruffles or mesh or cut outs. It’s a bit crazy how much the dresses have gotten bolder and over the top in the last couple years.

@allyfally:  In my area those dresses where pretty standard prom wear for the popular/rich crowd..Mine probably would be considered slutty ( just had an open back) by some standards…I think its a regional thing for sure.

What I couldn’t get past when I saw my little brother off to prom was how much  OLDER the girls look now ..like all of his girl friends could have passed for their early 20’s.  I think I looked like a HS student up until I was 23 lol!

@allyfally:  I cant agree more! I was really shocked by some of the dresses I have seen!! I should have taken a picture but when i went wedding dress shopping….and I found 2 of the UGLIEST prom dresses ever!! my dad would have shot me for these!!!

dress #1.) was SHORT like sneeze and there is a coochie shot short! even on the gal who was trying it on when we were browsing dresses (I am about 5’3″  and she looked to be about size 2 and about 5’1″  as a guestimate!) skin tight, now wait for it!!! It had HOT PINK FUR around the breasts, (like all the way around the top of the dress down to just below the bust!) and the rest of the i guess you call it a dress was like spandex material with purple glass shard looking crystal thingies….it was uhhh skimpy to say the least, and the dress attendant was helping the girl pair the dress with these seriously 5 inch lucite heels….I would have been dead for even joking about wearing it!

dress #2…was basically a hot pink snake skin spandex skin tight onsie on top….imagine a strapless hot pink sparkly snake skin Beyonce out fit from single ladies….with a sheer barbie pink high low slip over skirt that was completely sheer pink….

ohh and the third one….was cut down in a deep V to approximately where the belly button would be….and a low to the crack back….plus a damn near hip high thigh slit in of course a nice barbie purple….

I couldnt believe it prom dresses have certainly changed since i have graduated high school!!

The cut outs wouldn’t be allowed at the high school where I went (and now work), but the high slits would as long as no undergarments were showing. I think the garters would be out, though.

@allyfally:  ugh, artificial french manicure, unnaturally curled hair, and 1990’s prom dresses? I’m basically throwing up over here.
