Negative. The pitch of the shoe (the angle your foot is at) is determined by the heel height. So if you just hack off the heel but still have a high pitch youre not really going to be able to walk.

a11ieny:  Heels can be shortened, but generally not more than 1/2″.

The cobbler told me to stand on a bench with the heels hanging over the edge, then slowly drop the heel down until the back of the ball of the foot was flat on the bench. The amount of heel below the level of the bench would be the maximum that could be cut off and still keep the shoes properly balanced.

julies1949:  How do you know so many tidbits about life like this? It is astounding, really!  Detailed, clear advice.

OP, drastically altering heel heights is definitely unwise. Stick to a height you are comfortable with to start or your feet will regret it. I can wear anything less than 4.5″ easily, but more than that and my feet protest by refusing to walk. Beautiful shoes must still serve their purpose.
