I went to Rocky Point (drove from Phoenix), Cancun and Isla Mujeres last year and everything was fine.  I have a co-worker who just returned from Los Cabos and she also said there were no problems (besides her drinking the water) and another friend who returned from Playa Del Carmen without a hitch.  I think if you stay in resort areas of well known destinations you should be fine.  Obviously stay away from places like Juarez.

AGH! That drives me nuts! Tourist destinations are perfectly safe. I mean we have really shitty and shady places of the US but that doesn’t keep people from coming here. Cancun should be completely fine.

If you want to get into a more “romantic” and slow paced area since you’ve already done Cancun itself, check out Playa Del Carmen. It’s only about 45 minutes away but much slower and more relaxing.

Just got back from playa del Carmen! It was fantastic and I even walked from playa to our resort at night (about 20 minute walk) without a thought or worry abot my safety!

@MsJ2theZ:  +1

you are more likely to get robbed or murdered walking down the street in major cities in the US than you are in Mexico

@gpiglet:  We got married & honeymooned in Mexico on Isla Mujeres and spent one night- by fluke- in the hotel zone in Cancun. I felt just as safe as I do back home on Isla Mujeres, but Cancun was another story. I felt super skeeved out by Cancun, but we only stayed one night and were at a huge cancun strip bar with bottle service (Mandala Bay I think?). Let’s just say I stayed close to Darling Husband the whole time we were there and was extremely uncomfortable- when he had to go to the restroom I was left alone and no joke at least two dudes tried to get me to drink something out of their solo cups in less than 5 min… Isla was great, even at 2am stumbling around trying to find our hotel- many a nice person pointed us in the right direction! I felt like we could have just fallen asleep in a lounger on the beach & been just fine when we woke up in the AM on Isla- that place was paradise! But Cancun- no way no how for this lady ever again!

@Makemeamrs:  I think that really depends where in Mexico you are talking about. Yeah, it’s safe to go to most of the tourist destinations, but several Mexican cities have some of the highest murder rates in the world. My dad wasn’t aware of the danger, and offered to gift me a house at the Fairmont in Acupulco for a week. I looked into it, and Acapulco has the 2nd highest murder rate in the world. The US state department doesn’t allow their employees to go more than 2 blocks from the beach. So, it would likely be okay to go these and never leave the resort, but that’s not my style.

@gpiglet: Check the US State Department website. It will tell you which places are safe to go. The state department has much better information than brides on a wedding forum 🙂

Edit to add: You should also look into Cozumel. I haven’t been to Cancun, but from what I’ve heard, Cozumel is much nicer.

@gpiglet:  My Fiance and I are doing both a cruise and then Mexico. We’re doing a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas from the port of Miami and then we’re flying to Mexico from Miami and staying in a resort in Playa Del Carmen for 7 days. Its AI and Adults Only. Its known for being very quiet so I too, was very weary about going outside of the resort but after much research, I found that Playa Del Carmen is very safe.

Check out the Karisma resorts. We’re going to El Dorado Maroma. Maroma Beach which is in Playa Del Carmen is rated in the top 10 beaches in the world. That is what sold me! Plus the infinity jacuzzi on the balcony didnt hurt either 😛

Enjoy! Happy planning!
