marierenee:  Personally, I’d go for it!

I only had a 5 month engagement (and for a large DW!).  I had never figured I’d do a short engagement but I am SO HAPPY that I did.  The big benefit is that a shorter timeframe makes you focus on what’s important.  Honestly, so much wedding stuff out there is just a distraction (should I hand write my envelopes, should I get this cake topper or that one, help me create an entire set list for my professional DJ – WHO CARES!?!).  You get to just make decisions and then move on.

My process for a short wedding was this:

1) Overall vision.  What kind of wedding did we want?  What were the top three things we really cared about?

2) Guest List.

3) Budget.

Then go.  Make sure the things that matter get done, forget the rest.

Depending on what your venue provides and how large of a wedding you plan on having I would seriously consider pushing it back another year.  If you don’t want to push it back you’re going to have to settle on a lot of things that wouldn’t be your first choice.  I have an October wedding too and it’s a lot to do and I already have a lot done, I can’t imagine just starting.  Good luck to you!
