The second option is good, the first one might get ugly.. you don’t want your vendors to feel like they’re getting shorted.

Many caterers would not agree to work in that situation. If you can find two that will work together, I see no problems.

will the venue have separate kitchens for each of the caterers?  even if the food is cooked off-site, a lot of the assembling and some heating is done on-site.

in my opinion, i think it’s better to work with one.  you will also probably pay more because of less volume and then there’s the labor, delivery, and a bunch other costs added on in addition to the food costs.

are you sure one caterer can’t provide what you are looking for in the other?  i would ask.  if there are specific ethnic dishes you are looking to serve or something, ask to see if they can accomodate you.  if they can’t then i see no problem with you bringing in someone who can though i think that may be a pain for you and them.

Double check that your venue will allow it first.  Then if it’s ethnic specialties, many times a caterer will agree to it, but usually under regular menu circumstances that would not happen.

There’s too much that goes on behind the scenes that would be a nightmare with 2 caterers.

Also, depending on your venue it could affect staffing, linens/china and even site fees.

Be sure to ask lots of questions from each party and let them know what’s happening before you sign any contracts.

Good luck!

I think it’s totally fine to ensure you get what you want.  We’re actually having three caterers.  One for the cocktail hour, one for dinner and one for the dessert buffet.  Everyone is perfectly fine working together and has taken no issue.
