Under US federal law, Marijuana is listed as a Schedule I controlled substance- which  are defined as possessing “a high potential for abuse, … no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and there is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.” Heroin and morphine are examples of other Schedule I substances.

I think that’s bullshit.  But then, that’s my opinion.  A lot of people consider marijuana “the gateway drug.”  What a load. We all know that alcohol and cigarettes are the REAL gateway drugs!!

*And yeah…your friends that said that its a plant are the ones who I think are spot on– but the thing is, there’s a lot of money in the prosecution of marijuana posession and distrubitution.

@echolove:  It is a drug. So is caffeine. And alcohol. And ibuprofen. And tobacco. And morphine. Yadda yadda…I like drugs.

We could debate the drugginess of mary jane all day, but I do know this:

NOBODY overdoses on weed.  Unless you buy it from some sketchy guy behind a WalMart who laced your bag with PCP or some shit.

I don’t smoke but I think it’s ridiculous that it’s illegal while people can legally drink to the point of death.

@echolove:  Oh boy. I study drug addiction and I can tell you it definitely is a drug and will impair you! It is quite difficult to overdose on, but it certainly can have detrimental effects to users. Personally, I don’t think that responsible adults should be getting high on a regular basis, but plenty do. I think it may be a valuable tool to help some people (ie cancer patients), but I think that many people abuse it.

Of course it’s a drug. A drug is anything that has pharmacological effects on the body. So stoned Kate is right, it’s a drug in the same sense as caffeine and ibuprofen, and likewise for crystal meth and heroin. As for overdosing, it depends on what you’re trying to avoid. Can it kill you? No. Does it have other potential adverse effects that can reach uncomfortable levels? Yes.

It is a mind altering drug yes,  but on a scale of drugs relatively harmless. I see a lot bigger issue a with my 40-60 year old patients hooked on xanax and vicodin than pot. Or the “I drink a bottle of whisky every two days and a 12 pack all alone last night” who come to the hospital with alcohol poisoning,  stay with DTs and leave hooked on the ativan we have been giving them to keep them from totally freaking out.

At least from what I understand, there isnt the same physical addiction that most other drugs bring, something that can’t be said of caffeine,  nicotine or alcohol,  all of which are legal. But there still is the issue of our opinions aside,  it is still illegal.
