I wouldn’t say that bad grades are a deal breaker. I would say it is a good sign they called and asked you to explain rather then rejecting your application. In the future, until you reach a point where you aren’t sending your transcripts, its important for you to address why you received the poor grades in a cover letter. Most companies would not take the time to call you and ask you to explain. I would also remember that HR takes about 2 minutes to do the initial review of your documents. Make sure the best version of yourself is in those documents. Good references are great but not if you don’t get past their initial review. Hope that helps and good luck!

My advise is…relax. I tried so hard to get my dream internship. Intitally, they turned me down and I was crushed. Absolutely devastated. Then at the last minute the offered me the postition. Yay! I was ecstatic. Well the job turned out to be a nightmare. The place was INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I did not pick up on this during my externships. I ended up getting FIRED! Then I got hired by an even better practice nearby. Then I again got fired, on good terms, because businees was too slow. (my industry got hit HARD by the downturn). Well, now I have my own business and I met my fiance here. So the moral of my crazy story is….dont’ stress. Life will not go the way you planned. RELAX. You will end up ok no matter what. Go with the flow : )

Not if you can explain it.

@NoOneYouExpect:  I’ve never heard of a job checking transcripts. I have a few degrees and no one has asked to see them, let alone see my grades. They generally call to verify that you actually have a degree (standard background checks) but that’s where it ends (at least in my experience).

I wouldn’t worry about one bad grade, but a series of them on the second transcript would be very concerning.  It might be worthwhile to follow up to address those Fs.

It you explained it, you’ve done all that you can do about it. I’ve always heard that jobs look at the progression of how you do, so the fact that you’ve improved immensly probably won’t be over looked – I think the fact that there was some time in between will also work in your favor.

Try not go get too nervous and good luck!

@NoOneYouExpect:  Gotcha.  Then relax, you did all you could, and you showed improvement, which should be seen as a postive.
