I’ve been looking around today for a wedding band in plainum and haven’t been able to find what I’m looking for.
I got the impression from the salespeople at more than one store that platinum is going out of style. One even said, “Yeah that USED to be a popular metal choice;” and another said that gold is more expensive than platinum? I feel like I’m in the twilight zone!!
I am just looking for a channel set wedding band, probably 1/4 to 1/2 ctw in platinum. I don’t want an eternity band because it would be hard to resize. Do any chain stores carry this? I hate to go custom and pay more if I don’t have to.

Going custom will not cost you more money, nor will going to a small local jeweler. Seriously, don’t listen to chain store sales staff. Don’t shop there at all. Support local businesses and get what you want. Win-win.

Platinum is very classic and IMO the best if you can afford it. With the economy, I assume people just aren’t buying it as much because they can’t afford it. I don’t think you ever have to worry about platinum going out of style. I have palladium, which I really like but if money were no object we probably would have gotten platinum!

I wouldn’t say it’s going out of style, I mean it looks so similar to white gold. I just think it’s not as common, particularly in chain stores.

@lovekiss: Hmmm interesting 🙂 Maybe I need to try and hunt down some local jewelers and do a cost/quality comparison. I guess I just assumed it would cost more.

Platinum is without a doubt the choice for luxury high-end jewelry. It is denser and more pure.

Gold is more expensive than platinum right now, but not because it’s more popular. I suspect jewelers will try to sell you on whatever will make them the most money at the time! Like anything, it’s just a personal preference. It’s like colored gems, halos, yellow gold, all the things people think is “trendy” is just going through the same upswing/downswing of popularity but has really always been a staple in jewelry. Platinum is no different.

We got my ering in platinum but were already going custom anyway. This is in Australia, but our jeweller told us currently gold and platinum are about the same price but platinum rings are still more expensive because of the extended manufacturing time involved. I think it’s worth hunting around to find what you want, whether it’s “in style” or not. Good luck!

White metals are in style right now, but white gold is more popular simply because it’s cheaper. If I had gotten a white metal, it would have been platinum or palladium. I can’t even wear white gold.

Platinum is a timeless classic…
But also an expensive metal (usually more than gold), which accounts for the fact that when it comes to chain jewellery stores in particular you won’t usually see much in the way of Platinum (late Spring / Early Summer I was quoted a price difference of $ 1000 for two identical Wedding Bands… one in 10Kt White Gold and the other in Platinum)
But as KatyElle: said right now Gold is trading higher ($ 1711 vs $ 1553)… which I am guessing is because of the Economy… and probably the upcoming US Election this week (people buy gold when they are nervous about stuff going on in the world… thus driving the price up)
By Christmas the market will probably make an adjustment, and Platinum will be back on top.

very interesting. I never thought of it going out of style. It has always been my preference. I’m not a gold fan…and white gold…just doesnt cut it. I dunno why.

I’m not really sure, but I do know that I love my platinum rings! 🙂

I got platinum because I didn’t want to redip my ring… I live very far away from the place my ring is from. Plus my fiance just thought it was superior to gold so he was all for it.

This gave me a hilarious visual… A bunch of people in tuxedos hoarding gold… lol
BTW- I have platinum and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Chain stores don’t carry much platinum (probably because it is more expensive and thus less popular for a lot of people who shop at chain stores), and so they try to talk you out of it. I was looking for a platinum wedding band from zales and they tried to quote me $4,000 to get a wedding band made in platinum that they charge $500 for in white gold. Yea…. no. If you’re looking for platinum go online or to an independant jeweler.
