That’s what I just read from Bed Bath and Beyond, I’m going for stuff we’ll need and use… maybe a few other tidbits we’d like lol for an 80 person wedding (which I suspect we’re gonna wind up with) that would make it 160 items. Unless you’re counting every towel and glass separately I don’t think I will make that lol

The two per person rule exists because some things are small, low cost items. You can expect a guest to probably only buy 1 place set of china, but another guest might buy you 15 kitchen utensils or 5 of your everyday plates or 4 towels 2 handtowels, and 2 washcloths, so in the end, it shoudl average to about 2 per guest to accommodate for such low-cost items.

We’re adding to ours because I was told by relatives that there wasn’t enough on it for them to buy… for my shower in MARCH, haha. So I guess we’ll be adding some, but I have no idea if it will add up to 2 items/guest.

@annasaf83:  Yes, I’m referring to counting each towel and glass separately.

“2 gifts per person” is wishful thinking on the part of the stores. They want to sell more merchandise. If they can get you to put together a really big registry and then “complete” it afterward, they come out ahead, even with whatever discount they offer on the completion.

I never heard that either…but I think they did suggest a mininum number of items to register for (which I promptly forgot). We just made sure to include a wide price range and a mix of practical and fun things. We already live together, so we already have a lot, but there are a few things we would like ‘upgraded’ or things that we were hoping to get someday. I felt like we registered for a lot, considering we’re having a smaller wedding, and was kind of embarrassed…but my sister said it was the shortest registry she’d ever seen!

We followed that guideline at BBB and ended up with WAY too much stuff on our registry.  We registered for over 200 items and only got like 35 of them.  If I had it to do again, I would pare it way down, I think it overwhelmed people.

ETA:  When I look back over on my registry, I’m actually embarrassed at how much stuff is on it….I must have looked incredibly greedy to some people.
