My Fiance & I are same sex and had the idea of doing rainbow layers in a cake. That way when it’s cut, the layers will show. This made me think, maybe there is a way to do rainbow as a theme without it looking hideous or like a carnival. Then I started browsing through pinterest, and it doesn’t seem to be possible lol
The only things I have come up with are:
-place cards with rainbow colored boarders
-bridesmaids with different colored flowers and maybe a colored sash to match with the dresses in a solid print like black
-favors of cake pops with rainbow colored icing
The thing is, we’re not really rainbow people. We’re obviously marriage equality activists though and do want to incorporate that SOMEHOW. I’m just not sure if rainbow is the right way. The cake is for sure though, Fiance loves the idea! So then I’m left wondering if having the rainbow layers with say, a steel gray & golden yellow color scheme would totally throw everything off when it’s cut???
Input welcome =)
oh, and I would add a poll but WE CAN’T ANYMORE. grr.

I love the idea of the cake. I think that’s all you need to have a rainbow and keep it subtle. If you’re not really rainbow people, you don’t need to go all rainbowy all over everything!
Are you having any bridesmaids/men? They could paint the soles of their shoes rainbow colors. That would look pretty freaking cool, and wouldn’t be in your face.

Love peachacid idea with the shoes, very cute! Agree if you’re not wanting to go too over the top just do a few very subtle nods to rainbow, people will still get it!

I wish we had done a rainbow theme. I love colors.

I think you can totally pull of the rainbow theme in certain areas as long as you have a strong anchor color(s) to pull it all together- or else it will look quite carnival-ish! I think the steel grey and the yellow will be really classy anchors and the rainbow touches you mentioned will add a little bit of fun and whimsy. 🙂

i think differebt colored dresses, shoes, or sashes would be such a great idea. Maybe each table can be a different color theme. Place cards can have the border the color of a person’s table. Maybe black can be your main color and you accent witt rainbow.

Hmmm… We are same sex also, but I am extremely anti rainbow when it comes to our wedding! I think it can be cute when done the right way, I just want to focus to be on our commitment to one another. Not the fact we are lesbian. I think the cake idea sounds adorable though! Congrats, by the way!

Please don’t do the colored sashes. This is an idea that is never seen in the real world but somehow brides think that bridesmaids are exempt from fashion guidelines. Where else would you ever see a woman wearing a lovely dress with a colored sash?
I think the rainbow themed can be done tastefully, just choose carefully where you want to use the colors.

You could do “naked” cakes…I’m not sure how they’d taste, but they looook amazing!

peachacid: I like that idea!! And just getting a cute picture of it. Barely anyone will notice =) What happened to your avatar btw? lol did you change it or did it change with the new WB?
senoritafancypants: Thanks! We definitely haven’t decided on a color scheme so I guess I’d have to put the colors with a swab of rainbow colors to see if it’ll totally clash. I’m sure I’ll end up taking pictures and posting again haha!
Mrstidwell: yea that has been an internal conflict too. We’re pretty loud & proud but it’s kind of to cope with the fact that we don’t have a TON of support. Some, but not as much as we’d like. I don’t want it to be a huge gay marriage thing instead of being about us, I just wanted a few touches. Like we WILL be saying something during the “by the power vested in me by the state of new york” bit…maybe referencing the law passed to allow it or something idk but we want a few things but not to let it take over. I feel like it’s going to be a delicate balancing act =/ and congrats to you too!!
julies1949: LOL! yea I really wasn’t a fan of the sashes but I was trying to figure out if there was something I could use to tie the flowers in if we went that way. We probably won’t even do those though so no worries =P

I think the rainbow inside cake looks good regardless of what the outside looks like.
I like the idea of the flowers being all the colors of the rainbow. It just looks super colorful instead of “THIS IS A RAINBOW!!!” ya know? If you’re doing favors at the place settings you could do each one in a bag or tied with a ribbon of the different colors of the rainbow. (I have red, person next to me orange, next to them yellow…. around the table.)
Using muted, pastel or darker “rainbow” colors would also help keep the rainbow on the subtler side.

I found this picture, too…I don’t like fondant, because I think it’s inedible, but this looks pretty cool:
Or, you could do this:
It’s edible!! It’s a CAKE!

peachacid: omg it looks like someone murdered a unicorn! WHO WOULD DO THAT!?! that can’t be good luck.
MexiPino: yea I thought about pastels but then realized it seemed “easter-y” to me. Then Fiance vetoed it completely. Literally saying “if we do pastels, I won’t come” lmao

soontobemrsm11: I changed my avatar a few weeks ago for a special event from my college (to flowers) and then changed it to the naked penguin just for a bit. I know it’s usually the marriage equality symbol…but what says marriage equality better than a bald penguin? I mean…he just shows that EVERYONE should be treated equally…=) I’m sure I’ll change it back eventually…I can’t find my posts sometimes because I always look for the red!
There is also this, that you could play at your wedding: http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsGYh8AacgY

peachacid: haha! I always look for the purple for mine, I don’t think I’d be able to find them either!
omg. that video reminds me of college WAYYYYY too much lmfao I’m dying.
