I have the same situation and the price quoted seems about right, I have gone into two jewelers and each quote was around 2k.

I don’t know what your budget is, but $1900 sounds very reasonable. Comparatively, I paid $1100 for a custom made platinum band engraved with a laurel/scroll motif.

$800 more for a band with diamonds nearly all the way around seems about right.

Wow, I love platinum rings, but this post makes me happy that they didn’t look good on me. We only paid around $500.00 for a custom made yellow gold band with little diamonds half way around it that would sit flush with my ering.

Sounds like a very reasonable price to me. My wedding band was custom made to fit my e-ring. Its platinum, with 5 small diamonds for 2100 (before tax). Since the Fiance didn’t care, we saved money on his ring and ordered a titanium band (only 250). There are soooo many to pick from!

@mosh20: Sounds reasonable considering it’s platinum which is quite expensive.

that is a little on the high end to me. i had mine made for about 1100. granted the price of platinum has gone up a little. but basically ask for a break down. they will have to give it to you anyways for your insurance purposes. that should help you get a better picture of what you are paying for!

I just posted something about the jeweler ripping me off recently too.  My ring is not curved, but Fiance modified the setting for my ering so it has to be customized to match exactly.  I went last Wed and got a quote from the there that day, he said 1600-2000 for my ring with about half caret diamonts (12 stones, half way around) in platinum.  I went back to the same store Saturday, different guy quoted me 1400.  We said we were looking to pay 1100 (and got that priced quoted from the store right downstairs for a almost perfect match ring, the only difference was the side profile, but # of diamonds, diamond weight, and setting was what I wanted) and actually told him that when he asked us where we got that price from.  … and he matched it.  So we went from a 1600-2k estimate to walking out with it for 1100.

I suggest shopping around a little and getting a quote from a few places where the band is as close to what you need as possible and using that to negotiate.  In raw material – the platinum and diamonds are probably about $600 max, the rest will be labor and profit.  But say the cost of platinum is about 1800 and oz right now.  The average ring will use 3-4 grams (I used blue nile plain platinum band to my ring size to estimate this), that’s not even a 5th of an oz, so you figure the platinum raw material value is 360 tops.  Then the little diamonds that go in the band are really not worth that much.  A diamond in another ring I have was loose, and I was like, wow, thank god i didnt lose that, and the jeweler says to me, oh that’s nothing, maybe $20 to replace.  *phew* that was long winded, but any jeweler can custom make a band for you, I would shop around a bit and find out if thats a reasonable price for the specs (xxx ct diamonds in platinum) you’re looking for.  If its not, I’d try to bargain with them some more.

@tiny tuna: * yes, its reasonable price considering its platinum. I agree it is very expensive but the jeweler’s quotes appear to be in-line with the competitors.

@mosh20:  I don’t know much about the metals but from what I looked into it it’s amazing how much platinum costs!!
Originally it was what I wanted but we went with white gold.

I hope the OP gets a good deal on it.

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: worth it for custom pieces could depend on a lot of things. What size are the diamonds? what quality? color? clarity? of the melee. I heard diamond melee for small bands are increasing in price so that may be something to consider in addition to the price of platinum.

I just ordered our wedding bands and my 2/3 eternity with 2 pointer diamonds in F/G VS quality came to $1500 in palladium/white gold. In platinum the piece would have been close to what you are paying so it seems like the price you are paying is fair as long as the quality in the diamonds is good.

You can also compare against other online vendors to see what they are charging for similiar eternity bands in the size and width you are looking for. Good luck!

I don’t know how much my rings were separately..since we had the setting custom made together.  The total package we ended up paying was $2400 (original $4800) for micro paved diamonds all around the bands.  They’re very thin bands and isn’t curved, so they might be cheaper than your curved one.  We went that route because I am really particular and I don’t like gaps between the rings. Hope you can get a good bargain. =)

@tiny tuna: The price of gold right now is actually at an all time high.  It’s been pretty much going up for the last 2.5 years from 70ish an oz to about 1420 an oz right now.  Platinum is no long worth over double gold is like it used to be since its at 1800/oz.  I think the main difference is that platinum jewlery is more pure (plat 950 is 95% platinum, where as 14k gold is only 58% gold), resulting in the price difference between jewlery of these two metals.
