Why oh why does Fiance want to get a new TV a blue ray player and thousands of DVD/blue rays.
1) we have a TV – a nice one which is big
2) the computer plays dvds and we don’t have netflicks. we watch movies on the ondemand
3) why do we need to own these movies when you can rent them from the library?
WTF! I hate you bestbuy! Stop trying to poison Fiance into thinking he needs these things!!

My Fiance has a thing for buying Blue Ray movies now because we have a PS3, but only movies we don’t own yet. We don’t watch a lot of movies and mostly use our Netflix account to stream old TV shows.
But having a HD TV is very nice and great for entertaining. It doesn’t bother me to just watch TV on the computer or on the old TV in the bedroom, but he can tell the difference.

i feel ya, i got a new fridge(because we needed one, or at least i think so) and he bought a giant tv and blueray player.. wtf? i got a FRIDGE! lol

So, we did not have a TV for our entire 6+ years together…until Friday. I won a giant TV at the charity auction Fiance co-chairs. It is still sitting all giant in a box in our living room un-opened. So this specific problem is not our problem. We’re kind of at a loss about what we are going to do with the giant TV.
On the other hand, my Fiance owns 9 guns and 36 fishing rods. We have a storage room filled with what must be 50+ duck and goose decoys. Fiance owns more pairs of camo pants than I do jeans. He did really well in the stock market one week a few years ago and ran out and bought a (used) boat…while I was away visiting my parents. Keep in mind, we live in the city in a bungalow. At least half of our storage is taken up with hunting and fishing gear, and my car will never, ever see the inside of our garage (that’s where the boat lives, naturally).
I understand you. My hobbies are so inexpensive and take up no space. When will the buying stuff end?

My Fiance purchases movies like I purchase books. I like to own the books I read so I can just read them again; he says the logic is true for his movies as well… I leave him alone about his movie purchasing addiction and he leaves me alone about purchasing books 🙂

my FH wants a new tv… and a wii… mind you we live in a 1 bedroom tiny apt and already have a 42 inch flatscreen and a ps3 player…. his defense? “we can put the 42 in the bedroom and put a 52 in teh living room!!! LOL” um no.
driving by that place is like taking a kid down the candy or ceral aisle… best buy can stick it where the sun dont shine. 😛

@monitajb – we haven’t had a TV set up in almost 5 years too (other than a little tiny old one in my FI’s office). Having said that, we do watch TV and movies, just on our computers (my Fiance did buy a large computer monitor for one of his computers). I wish we could just get rid of all TV watching :/ I believe we have more than 6 or 7 computers in our home though and I get tired of seeing them/ tripping over them.

My Fiance wants a “man cave” more than anything else in the world. He wants a huge tv surrounded by 4-6 smaller tvs. I roll my eyes but I’d let him do it. I spend way more money on clothes/shoes/make up and if it makes him happy so be it.

I have similar difficulties with my Fiance. In fact, he was coerced into canceling his Best Buy credit card. I use the word coerced because I swear I was gonna hurt him if he came home with another $60 video game. He completes them within a few days and they’re useless thereafter. If I were to calculate the amount of money he’s spent in the 7 years I’ve been with him, I’d probably shed a tear. His defense- I should be happy that his hobby keeps him indoors, as opposed to being out somewhere with friends. I can’t understand it, but on several occasions he equates it to my obsession with shoes… he might be semi-correct.

It’s not a gender difference, I am all for awesome technology.
HOWEVER. I *ABSOLUTELY HATE* Best Buy with a passion, and Boyfriend or Best Friend knows that if he so much as goes in there, it is likely I will not talk to him for days, it is that serious.
He took his dad in to buy a mouse for the computer, and while I understood, I gave him dirty looks for the rest of the day, and didn’t hold his hand for several hours. Then he cut himself on the packaging, which I told him he deserved.
I can’t begin to go on about how much I hate Best Buy. It’s like a frothing at the mouth, spewing evil and hatred and eyes rolled back type of hate, and I try my best not to hate anything!
They are by far the *WORST* company EVER! (there isn’t even a face in the faces to express my disgust with them!) I would love nothing more than for all of their stores to spontaneously combust, and perhaps take out some of the lying, good-for-nothing managers/etc with them!
So, I just avert my eyes and avoid Best Buy.
Rant made, there isn’t an option vitriolic and hateful enough for me to choose. Abhor is just scraping the surface.

@surkim: Totally the same here! If people only knew some of the crap they pulled on customers…especially the unwitting/non-tech savvy ones! It’s disgusting! And, they’re expensive…like 50% markup!
Honestly, I LOVE our HDTV. We bought it for ourselves as our christmas present and since it came with a blu ray player, we have started buying those too. Gotta say, the difference between DVD and blu ray is amazing 🙂

My Fiance is kinda the good one. He likes those kind of goodies. He is really good about knowing what we can/can’t spend. We did decide to buy a new TV a while ago and we were really smart with our purchasing. We ended up not going with the 1080 because we wanted the larger screen 50″.

Haha! Awesome. I am glad I am not alone in this – ie: WTF-ing our FIs hobby/buying habits.
Just so you know, Fiance wants to create a Bestbuy “register.” Uh….yea, he and I will discuss that one later

surkim: can you explain your position on Best Buy? It kind of sounds like my attitude towards Olive Garden/Darden (a former employer). Did you work for them?
My parents have been tricked into purchasing the ridiculous warranties with the Geek Squad because all of my laptops have been “surprises” and I had no input into them whatsoever. I even told them the second time to stop getting them at Best Buy and buying those damn warranties because the Geek Squad overcharges like mad and has on four occasions now sent my computer back, after as much as a MONTH AND A HALF’S wait time (talk about ridiculous for fixing the most basic of problems), with either the problems not fixed or NEW PROBLEMS. WTF. It makes me SO ANGRY when I think about what a racket the Geek Squad has going on.
I don’t have a problem with Fiance and his technology purchases. He is asking his rich grandma for a flat-screen HDTV for his birthday, and I’m alright with that, and I was alright with it before he thought to do this and was going to spend some of his own money (which we’re almost at the point of considering “our money”) buying one, and I was still okay with that. We’ve been watching TV and movies on my laptop since there is no working TV at my college, and I’ve gotten used to it. But we could really use a TV. He has an ancient, like 10-inch 1992 TV that we try to play video games on and it can be really hard just because of how small it is and image quality. Other than that, he’s not technology-obsessed. I can’t even get him to get a new phone, he’s had the same ugly cellphone with terrible sound quality and buttons impossible to push for the past SIX years–he’s renewed his contract three times now and been due a new phone each time, but hasn’t gotten one. Drives me crazy.

That is good enough reason for me never to take my computer to geek squad. They are just building a best buy here and I’ll probably never ever step in it.
