Darling Husband and I talk about names all. the. time. despite the fact that we’re not actively TTC right now. I like being prepared (at least a teensy bit) and so does he. We both love love love this name: Briella.
It means, “God is my might”, and though Darling Husband and I are both atheist, we don’t really care that the name has religious meaning. We still love it.
Would Ella be a good nickname for this? We don’t want to use Bri, Bree, etc. because his cousin uses that (Breanna) and we don’t associate with her (I wouldn’t want to call my child Bri because I’d think of her every time). Also, we don’t like Gabriella, because we don’t want the nn to become Gabby.
So is Briella okay (with nn Ella), or is it too ‘uncommon’ a name?

Yes. I like it. I’m planning to use (if I ever have agirl) the name Gabriella, with the nickname Brie. But make sure you start calling her Ella right away, because if you don’t other people will take it upon themselves to shorten it to Brie.

Briella is great, not too uncommon to be used at all because it is familiar-sounding and most importantly, easy to see how to say it!
I love Ella a lot too, and yes just make sure you introduce her as Ella and it should stick.

I won’t give my personal opinion of the name since you didn’t really ask for that. π
To answer your question, I don’t think it’s “too uncommon.” It only popped up on the social security’s top 1000 in 2010, but then moved up about 400 spots in 2011 to the 497th spot. I’m actually considering a name for my daughter that has never been in the top 1000 (Mirabelle). Now that’s uncommon.
I think Ella would work just fine as a nickname.

I bet a lot of people would end up calling her Bri. Why don’t you just name her Ella if that’s what you intend on calling her?

@Cory_loves_this_girl: If I name her just Ella, the initals will be ET. Not what I’m going for, LOL.

Very pretty name π Definitely call her Ella from the start though so people know to call her that π

@AcheneMalefic: Haha, not if she has a middle name!

@Cory_loves_this_girl: Very true. I can just see kids being cruel though (those that don’t know her middle name). Kids are cruel no matter what, but I don’t want to help them along if I can avoid it!
@Jacqui90: @clairebear000:
@Ashley_P:
Thank you. I plan on calling her Ella from the beginning!
@iheartnerds: You could give your personal opinion, I don’t mind at all. Not everyone likes the same names, and that’s totally cool! π

@AcheneMalefic: Well, I don’t have anything specific against it, I just don’t love the sound of it for some reason. I’ve never cared for Gabriella either. But you love it and that’s all that matters!

@iheartnerds: Agreed. If uncommon is what you’re looking for, this doesn’t really hit the mark. Are you just looking for a longer, uncommon form of Ella (so you can use Ella as a nickname)? Because there are plenty of those if you’re looking for suggestions. π

@iheartnerds: I actually do know what you mean. When I say it, I like the ending (the Ella part) but I’m not big on the beginning. However, since Darling Husband and I are not pregnant right now, I’m not super worried! LOL
@Squid: Yes, any suggestions with Ella would be great! I can’t think of any! We love the Ella part, but not Gabriella and I am not a huge fan of the Bri-. (Also, we’re not going for uncommon/common, we just want something that isn’t too ‘out there’ and ‘made up’ sounding, and not too common -so no Charmonay’s and no Ashley’s, if that makes sense.)

How about Arabella? Isabella I love but is very popular at the moment, so you may not want that
