I was watching a movie today and heard a name that I really loved. It’s a name I haven’t heard often, but isn’t a crazy or out-there name. The only problem is my last name is often mispronounced as that name! It’s similar to something like David Davide. The first name is spelled differently from the last name, though the last name is often mispronounced as the first name. Is this just totally cruel? I’m leaning towards yes but just wanted to see what others thought.

I wouldn’t. I’ve known several people with the same first and last names (or close enough), and I’ve always wondered what their parents were thinking.

Yes, cruel and unusual punishment. 😬😬
ETA: Are you thinking Noelle Noel? Please pretty please don’t do it. 😬

That would be awful to live with.

Don’t do that to the child. Really, out of ALL of the names that exist you can’t come up with a single other option??

Please, just name your kids something normal. As someone who has HAAAAAAATEEDDDD my name with the fiery passion of a thousand sons, who will never forgive my parents for the name…please just name them something normal with the most common spelling. Think about how many hours Ashley/Ashleigh/Ashlies have wasted in their lives explaining the spelling of their name.

Grid : it’s not, but that’s another similar example
Marie2 : it’s a normal name with normal spelling, it’s just the combination with the last name that makes it weird.
hockeybee0104 : we have a few other names on the list. This isn’t the only name, was just polling the crowd – it’s not like we decided this was the one and only option.
But case closed! We won’t put it on our list.

fourthnoel : If you have to question it, it’s not appropriate
My sister was going to call her daughter Allie Ashley until I stepped in and stopped her.
There’s a very famous Australian children’s novel called “Hating Allison Ashley” (that literally got made into a movie) and her daughter would get crucified in school.

Grid : hahahaa been watching too much Disney 🎄🎄

Don’t do it. We all hear of the names David Davidson or William Williams and wonder what the parents were thinking.

Oh I wanted to add another thing
Knew someone in high school who had a kid when she and her then boyfriend were 18. His last name was Newton. Called their child “Isaac” because “they were obsessed with the biscuits”
Didn’t have the heart to correct her. It was like talking to a goddamn courgette.

I’m pretty sure giving that first name would make people even more likely to mispronounce the last name.
So no! Don’t do that.
