Hmm… I’ve never attended a black tie wedding, so I might not be too much help, but I think that dress looks elegant and very classy.

And, IMO, if a bride and groom have a black tie wedding, they should inform their guests of the nature of the event, but they should not dictate what they wear.  That should be left up to their guests.

So, if it were me, I would get that dress, and wear it comfortably and proudly!  There’s no reason, in my mind anyway, to buy a gown you are not comfortable in if this dress works for you.

I agree that that’s not black tie.

Nope, sorry!

IMO – black tie = long (floor length) gown.

I once went to a black tie wedding at the Mandarin Oriental and the attire was quite formal. Women were dressed in gowns, so I would say that the dress you posted compared to the wedding I attended, does seem more cocktail than black tie. Good luck!

I agree, I don’t know if that dress is really “black-tie”… BUT I go have gone to a Marine Corps Ball which was a formal event and there were girls in long gowns and short cocktail dresses and they all looked beautiful!  I think that dress is very elegant looking, maybe you could dress it up further with jewelry and shoes. Ultimately it’s what your going to be comfortable in and what your comfortable spending on a dress.

Do you mind me asking where you got it? I think its gorgeous!

Sorry – I have to agree with the gals on this one. If it were black tie optional, I would’ve said you were fine w/ this dress. Sorry!!!

I agree, black tie is the ultimate in formal which to me= gown. I think the navy dress you posted is much more appropriate and cute! 🙂

I would agree that the long dress is more appropriate for a black tie function.  However, I attended a black tie required wedding where I wore a long gown because that is what the bride said she “preferred”… and half of her friends were in cocktail dresses similar to the one that you posted.  So I think you could get away with wearing it, especially if you are not comfortable wearing your longer gown, as long as you keep the shoes and accessories understated and classy.
