IMO the black and white cage dress is very LOUD and waaay too short for a semi formal. It even looks mini on the short legged women. It is a statement dress and not meant for a semi formal wedding. I love, love, love the orange dress! Even though the orange dress has a busy print it has a more formal look to it. I vote you rock the orange one!
p.s. Sorry about your house! Best of luck!

CorvusCorax: first of all, I’m really sorry to hear about your house. That must be an incredibly traumatic experience. I think both of the options you posted are fine. If at all possible, given your circumstances, try to dress them up a bit with some more formal accessories. However, there is nothing wrong with either of those dresses as is. I’m kind of surprised by people saying the dresses are too short. You’ve already said you are not especially tall, so I think the length is perfectly fine. Unless, the wedding is for a very conservative crowd. I’ve attended lots of weddings all over the US. The only times I’ve ever seen people pass judgement on a guest’s attire was when girls have shown up in dresses so short their ass was practically hanging out and another occasion where the father of the groom wore jeans to a formal ballroom wedding.

I really like this dress, but I think the orange one is more appropriate.

The dress got some really mixed reviews, lol. I honestly won’t be in the mood to go dress-shopping for a day so I’ll go with the first dress I posted. I like the orange patterned one I have as well, but I feel more comfortable in the black right now because I’ve gotten a bit of a paunch in the past couple months (lol) and spanx suck. The black one is very suitable for hiding a gut.
So I hit the outlet mall and got a clutch and a pair of shoes. The heels are really high but I’m quite short and the dress honestly doesn’t hit more than a few inches above my knees. And they were a bargain.
My mother offered for me to borrow her pearls for next weekend. I may take her up on the generous offer, or I may find some costume jewelry to wear.

I think it would stand out and looks a bit too informal imo. I agree with MrsTtoB, it looks more like something you would go shopping on a nice weekend in. Sorry about your house burning down. I hear what you are saying about dress shopping, I hate it too!
Edit: I don’t know why the timestamp on this post is 6 hours before the post was made! It’s driving me nuts.
