    Yes, tone it down.

    No, wear it anyway.

I think it’s not appropriate for a beach photoshoot. I’d go with something more casual, flowy, and lighter in color.

I don’t think it is appropriate for a beach photoshoot at all. I would go for something flowy and beachy, I bet you know what you need to look for. 🙂

HikingInHeels :  totally fine! you can wear whatever you want! Doesn’t need to be flowy or beachy just because every other basic b is doing it. 😉

I like the colors but the material looks a bit heavy.  I would think your Fiance would have to wear something heavier as well because I like when couples coordianate for their engagement pics.

You could get some great pictures with that nearby the beach but I think it’s too formal to actually be on the beach. If you have the ability to two options, then that would be a good change.

HikingInHeels :  I think depending on what you wear with it it could be fine.  I wouldn’t wear a ton of jewellery and heels (heels in sand are terrible!) My only thought is that it might be really really warm and you might get kinda sweaty!

HikingInHeels :  Who is going to care? Plus, your username is Hiking in Heels — sounds like overdressing might be kind of your thing. Which is fine. Dressing up is fun. I’d skip the heels and look for shoes that will let you walk on sand, but as far as the dress, who cares? If you like it wear it, if you want to keep looking, keep looking.

It looks fine! We decided to do VERY formal all black clothes for our beach photos. We went bare feet and it worked out awesome. It’s different and looks so good. But you WILL get wet. My lovely floor length black lace dress for soaked and covered with seaweed, but it looked great in photos haha. No one can dictate how YOU do YOUR photos. Wear what you want and rock it!

I say wear what makes you feel pretty/special/ENGAGED! There’s no rule here, and even if you think it’s a little bold (it’s really not) so what! You’re allowed to be bold, why do you think you’re getting pictures taken of you anyway? To make a statement! Have your Fiance wear something that matches or goes with it in some way, and you’re set

I think it’s fine. Agree with PPs that if you want to dress it down, go with bare feet, minimal to no accessories, natural makeup, and beachy hair. I can see it being really cute in pics like these:

I don’t see why the dress you posted wouldn’t work in the context you described. I would, however, suggest pairing it with espadrilles and a Panama hat. Something like this (espadrilles from Toms, Panama hat from Ralph Lauren):

If you’d like to consider dresses with lighter fabrics, these are lovely options that would also work with the acessories suggested above:

Wear whatever YOU love!  That would be super cute with wedges!

I think it’s an upscale nice summer dress definitely appropriate for an engagement shoot on or nearby the beach. The whole flowy thing is pretty but a little tired and yesterday as it’s the default for beach locations. It’s not the Only look that works. The colours of the dress would look lovely if your fiancé wears a light linen suit too, possibly without the jacket and just a nice white shirt rolled up sleeve and casually tucked/untucked. And there are so many dressy flat sandals with beading and crystals or like the lace espadrilles by Dolce & Gabbana that would be perfect for you, he could wear nice brown woven sandals.
