I had an interview for a small department in a large medical instituion last week. I thought the interview went well, and the hiring manager said they needed to fill the position and would be making their decision very soon.
I was disheartened when I didn’t hear from them early this week, but I left a message for the HR rep yesterday anyway so I could find out one way or another.
The HR rep didn’t call me back, but today he sent me a seeminly random email with the organization’s benefits information. Of course I got my hopes up thinking I was about to recieve a job offer. When I emailed him back asking for an update on the job, he said they are still evaluating applicants.
WTF??? Why send that email to get my hopes up?

My guess would be either HR got confused as to what he was emailing you the first time OR he sent it to you by mistake.
Since they said they’re still reviewing appicants, you’re still being considered :). It sucks waiting… “soon” to someone may be a few days but “soon” to someone else may be 2 weeks.

Did you go on a second interview?

@canthugallcats: It seems like he was probably confused, especially since he gave me the benefit info in person. The only reason I expected to hear back this soon is because the hiring manager said they would be making their decision the day following my interview…
@MrsTCB: No, there was no mention of a second interview being part of the process. Hopefully they will get it figured out by end of next week…

It sucks but I have to agree with @serabell regarding the varying meaning of soon. I find they usually take longer than they say they will to make a decision. They want to make sure they have the right person.
Since you’re still being considered, they clearly think you could be that person. Try not to stress too much. Waiting is the worst. Good luck!

Update: no news all week! Should I give up on this one? Should I contact them again to inquire the status? This is driving me nuts.
I have another promising interview on Tuesday. I just wish I had some kind of full time job sorted out before the wedding, which is on the 28th, but I doubt that’s going to happen.

sorry! in my experience they’ve always contacted me asap for a second interview because they know all their second round ppl need to work out their schedules.

I wouldn’t officially give up, especially if you like the job. I’d go for the new interview but leave the door open on the other one. it sucks that they aren’t following up! Good luck with both of them!
