@nearlymarriedlass:   What about Olive?  I think it takes some getting used to, but it’s adorable!

First thing I thought of , Lib Tyler 😛 .& I think it would depend on last name, i like short first names with longer last names, but on its own .. I just think it needs something more :p

@nearlymarriedlass:  What about Lavinia? Its an older name that you never hear, but I love it.

I think that Liv is also a (somewhat uncommon) nickname for Elizabeth, although I haven’t done the research to be sure.  It’s a really cute name!

I don’t see anything wrong with it.  I think a lot of people are going to think its short for Olivia.  But since you have vetoed it my mind went straight to Livinia or spelled Lavinia.

@nearlymarriedlass:  I think Liv is a lovely name on its own. Its actually considered a full first name in some cultures.

I personally wouldn’t use “Liv” on it’s own but I do like it as a nickname. I really like the name Livinia or Lavinia (I recently fell in love with that name from watching too much Downton Abbey but we’re having a boy so I can’t use it… lol)

I adore Liv! All by itself, too!

FWIW, my own full name is a name most people would associate with a nickname (I don’t like giving my name out on message boards, but it’s the equivalent of being just “Beth” or “Jen” or “Kate”) and it’s fine. And I also sort of liked that it distinguished me somewhat from all the other Elizabeths/Jennifers/Katherines out there.

I think that there is a definite connection to Liv Tyler, but that’s really a connection for OUR generation–I seriously doubt your daughter and her own peers will have a clue as to who Liv Tyler is.

PS–Julianne Moore’s daughter is named (just) Liv I think.

Yes, it’s fine to use Liv on its own.  It’s a traditional Scandinavian girl’s name, and I think it’s lovely.  I might be a little biased since Liv was the name of my favorite babysitter growing up 🙂

A friend of ours has a daughter named Liv. I thought it was a little strange at first but they also have a very long european last name so it actually works nicely. She is a super cute little girl.
