My grandfather and I were VERY close. He was practically my father. About 7 years ago he was murdered and I still cannot talk about it without breaking down. I had told my husband that when I have a son, I would like to have my grandpa’s name as the middle name. My husband said the name was too “old” as in old fashioned. I told Darling Husband that it meant something to me and now that I think about it, it may be a little “old”.
My grandfather’s name was Irwin. One name Darling Husband and I really like for a boy (we are currently not TTC) is Connor so I thought Connor Irwin would sound cute.
Is this name too “old”?

I think Connor is a DARLING name and definitely not ‘too old’. Irwin is older sounding – but I think it works PERFECT as a middle name and is a wonderful way to honor your grandfather.
I am speechless at your loss and think it’s wonderful that you will give your child that name.
FWIW, my father died from cancer when we were kids, and all the firstborn grandkids of my 3 siblings (girls and boys) have some form of his name. Either his middle name as their middle name or his first name as their middle name.

I do think Irwin is a bit old fashioned but I also think that if the name is meaningful to you, it shouldn’t matter. Once the child is born, your husband will start associating the name with your son and forget about how “old” is sounds.

I think Irwin is a great name, easy to say and spell, classic, meaningful to you. Consider all these crazy trendy new names people are coming up with, I imagine people would find Irwin to be a refreshing recognizeable name. I am named after my grandmother so I have a very old name, and she died suddenly so 3 of my cousins share her name as a middle name. I’ve always liked having an old name and I think it’s special that carrying on her name has been so important to my family. The oldest of the name pales in comparison to it’s significance to you.

Middle names aren’t used all that much, so I’m not sure why your husband is so concerned about it sounding old. Connor is a perfectly modern name and that’s what he’ll be going by, so I think it’s fine to have Irwin as a middle name to honor your grandfather even if it’s a bit old-fashioned.
Some of my friends have their mothers’ maiden names as their middle names. They’re definitely not feminine or popular names, but my friends love them because of the sentiment.

I love classic names like that, so I think it’s great. Even better that it’s a meaningful name to you.
By The Way, lots of people have middle names that are in honor of an older family member, so I wouldn’t worry about Irwin sounding “old.” Middle names hardly ever come up, anyway…

I’m latina. We still give Irwin as a first name. A middle name is not an issue. Plus its meaningful. I hope he learns to respect your wishes.

I like it a lot. The meaning behind it makes it so special. 🙂

I like the way Connor Irwin sounds too! Like PPs have said, middle names are only really used if the kid wants to, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

I think Irwin is a great name, especially as a middle name. Personally, I’m a fan of old-fashioned names anyway, but it really doesn’t matter that it’s “old” as a middle name. It’s so sweet too, that your future son will be named after his great-grandpa. My middle name was my grandma’s middle name, and I love knowing that.

I actually like the name Irwin a LOT! It doesn’t sound old to me at all.

I think it sounds very cute and is a lovely tribute to someone you cared about. My username is my actually my middle name…totally weird for a girl, I know…I hated it as a child but it’s a family name and something I really appreciate now.

I like Irwin as a first OR middle name! I work with families/children and see hundreds of baby names a month. I’ve NEVER, in 3 years, seen an Irwin! He will be unique for sure if you decide to use it.
