It doesn’t matter how “old” a middle name is.  I think you should do it.

I am so sorry for your loss!!!

I think that that is a beautiful name. It was actually my understanding that it is very common to give middle names that are passing on a heritage of some sort, regardless of how “new” or “pretty” they are. My middle name is very traditional but has a story and so I love it. My two sisters both have family names as their middle names, not at all pretty! I think it is a wonderful way to honor your grandfather, and not at all too “old”. And as a PP said, compared to some of the ridiculous names some people choose these days, Irwin is downright normal!

 I think Connor Irwin sounds really good together! I love the idea of honoring your grandfather.

It sounds very dated. Also first name ended in R + Irwin will sound like ‘Con er-win’  The E and the I just don’t do it for me in terms of those phonemes going together… you have to really pause to get it out.  Oh, also it reminds me of Steve Irwin.

Older sounding family names are fine as middle names. Many families I know only consider family names when choosing a middle name. It’s a great way to honor your grandfather. I don’t think Irwin is bad at all, as family names go. I like it paired with Conner too.

If your Darling Husband is worried about your son being teased for having an uncommon, older middle name,  remember that will probably only happen once in like fifth grade. Make sure your son knows why he was given that name so he can say something like “It was my great-grandfather’s name. He was a great man.”

@Tswife4ever:

I think it’s a wonderful way to honor your grandfather. We are doing the same thing with our daughter. Her middle name will be after my husband’s maternal grandmother who was very dear to us both. She also had a very old fashioned name.

@AlliRae: My middle name is my grandmother’s middle name too! Actually my first name is a form of my other granmother’s middle name as well. I’ve always loved that. πŸ™‚

I think Connor is a great name!  Irwin is older sounding – but I think it works really well as a middle name and is a wonderful way to honor your grandfather.

Connor Irwin goes really well together too!

Older names are becoming much more popular now so Irwin doesn’t sound even remotely weird to me πŸ™‚  Even if you used it as a first name, I don’t think anyone would blink or think it sounded old fashioned. I’m naming our first boy after my grandpa as well, it’s a really special way to honor and remember them.

I love it! I think the “youngness” of Conner really balances it out!

So sorry about your loss. πŸ™

I’d be inclined to agree with your husband if it was a first name, but I love having older, classic names as middle names and paying tribute to family members. Plus, Connor Irwin sounds really nice together!
