Is this normal or did my dog groomer mess up?

Yeah, thats not a good cut. She buzzed him which isn’t something that should ever be done with double coated breeds (i’m assuming he has a double coat? Not sure the breed but it looks like it). I wouldn’t go back, that belly shave is awful and patchy and completely unnecessary.. I’ve always owned aussie shepherds, had a groomer do that to my aussie once and was livid; they have longer double coats for a reason

ETA – Doesn’t matter if the dog was being difficult for her. A clipper should not have been used over his entire body, end of story.

Not sure if it’s normal, I have a poodle and a terrier mix and I’ve never had them cut that short… basically commenting to say that your pup is adorable regardless of the haircut. Hope his skin feels better soon!

Did he have any matting? That could be the reason it is so short and patchy.

There may have been some confusion with the pictures too  if you like this lady I’d let her know you’re not happy with the length and see what she says.

I wouldn’t go back there. You were explicit with what you wanted. They totally messed up.

Poor pooch, hope he stops itching soon x

Like a previous commenter, I wonder if he had any matting that necessitated a down to the skin cut. If he did not, then, yes, the groomer messed up badly. It happens. I have an ex who is a dog groomer. She said that groomers generally prefer to be told (politely) if you are displeased so they have a chance to make it right rather than lose a customer and get negative reviews. I would ask the groomer what happened and show them again the photos that you showed them for guidance as well as a picture of what your dog looked like when you got him back from the hair cut.

Charliejeorge :  True, clippers can be used as long as they aren’t shaved down which she clearly did on your pups belly. Even then they should only be used on certain areas, definitely not the entire body. I also just hate clippers because (in general unless the groomer is amazing) because then all the fur is the same length which means it grows back at the same length and tends to feel rougher. In general (unless they are matted) double coated breeders should just get heavy brushing (which I think she was too lazy to do, hense the clip job) and scissor/feather cutting.

Again, I wouldn’t go back but as you can probably tell i’m pretty particular about how my dogs are groomed. I’ve seen too many aussies with destroyed coats from shaving/clipping and bad grooming

A photo of my aussie after a grooming… Again they should only be heavily brushed, de-matted and trimmed.

No No No.  I have English Springer Spaniels and I would die if a groomer ever buzzed them like that.  If the dog isn’t matted, they should not be doing that.  If you go back to this groomer, I would request they use only scissors to clip the dog. (Since they seem to be not using clippers responsibly.) But if it were me, I would not go back at all.  Nobody should be getting razor burn.  Your dog has a similar coat to my dogs, and you run a real risk of having the coat messed up long term from doing this.  (It can become thick and frizzy instead of silky, because the undercoat will push out the topcoat)  Sometimes it has to be done in the case of mats, surgical procedures, IVs, etc.  But not for fun.  And the groomer should have known that.

Charliejeorge :  Yikes do you have to take him to a groomer?  Not a professional but it looks way too short to me.
