So… poll time! I have a wedding to attend this weekend and I am fairly good friends with the bride and groom. I met them through my Fiance, and he grew up with the bride ( they dated in middle school/early high school haha.. so we are talking 15 years ago now)
Anyways, super nice couple and they are having an evening wedding at a very cool outdoor/indoor countryside venue.
My “dilema” is, I don’t know her/him well enough to know how formal they are and since I am not very familiar with the area I am not sure how formal the venue is. Just a quick Google search and I can see some pictures of the venue, but it really can be dressed up or dressed down, be indoors or outdoors.
I bought this dress on Saturday from White House Black Market. I really needed a black dress, it was on sale… so I thought it could easily be something I could wear to this wedding, too.
My question is… does it look too formal for a possible outdoor wedding? Also- I may have to get it altered just a tad because of the sizing. I normally wear a size 4, but this dress ran big and I had to get a size 2… and it STILL has some room at the top, which is fine since the neckline comes high enough that I don’t need to worry about a wardrobe malfunction at the wedding.
What jewelry/shoes do you suggest? I bought some pumps there, too…but I kind of want something more “funky” if that makes sense. Thanks for the help, you ladies help keep me in check when my Fiance just says ” looks good” to EVERYTHING. 🙂
The shoes I got:

It’s very cute! It isn’t too formal, I usually assume that weddings are business casual and while that dress is a little fancy for business but very cute!

I think it’s great. If you’re worried it will be too formal, you can always take a cardigan with you, it would dress it down a bit

Thanks, y’all! I guess I would rather be too over dressed than under dressed

I think this is perfect for any wedding a black dress is a simple black dress can be anything you want it to be…. for a formal look, wear a great smokey eye and red lipstick, killer heels, a statement cocktail ring and a clutch with a little sparkle or dress it down with a blazer (sleeves cuffed to 3/4 length) a pair of nude pumps, simple makeup with a glossy lip. Either way, this dress can go to any occation.

It’s lovely, maybe add a little colour with a cardi/hair flower/ jewellery?

I agree about the cardigan – that way you’ll be appropriately dressed either way!

Very cute dress and I love the shoes you got too. If you’re unsure of the dress code, I would maybe ask around mutal friends that might be going and see what they say too. I like the idea of wearing it with a cardigan for some colour.

Thanks, Y’all! I brought it by the seamstress this morning and she is going to take it in a pinch and I may just look for a cardigan sometime this week… I was thinking about a wrap, but that may make it seem too formal. I also already own some nude pumps like the ones below, so even though I already bought the black shoes I may just save them for later
Although in person they are more nude and not “peachy” looking

@Koala Bear: I sent my friend a text to see what she was planning on wearing and she said she wasn’t sure what to wear for the venue/type of wedding, either! Hmmm.. well we may both be a tad over dressed

Cute! I agree with the cardigan option. I also like the pink/nude heels! Fun jewelry is another way to dress it up or down.

Something I did for an evening wedding in July was a black dress (J. Crew Sophia in Silk tricotine) and wore a bright necklace, earrings and pashmina shawl and…some sort of heel, I forget. But it looked fine–so you could always do the shawl thing, too. But cardis always work.

@Mrs_Amanda: I personally think it is always better to be over dressed than under-dressed. It also isn’t like a gown, its a black dress. It is easy to dress up or down and especially if it is in the evening, inside or out, it will be lovely!

Very pretty! White house black market has some great options, I purchased a LBD there as well and I’d say LBD’s are pretty safe no matter what (except for maybe a day wedding), and like PP’s said, bring a light cardi to dress it down if need be, or a saran/pashmina.
I love the WHBM jewelry as well, but I know it’s kinda spendy, but pearls would be gorgeous! Also a red statement belt would be super cute if you wanna accesorize a little?

I like the dress and I like the idea of you wearing a shoe with color and/or a color other than black. A shoe that pops! How is this for funky? All at DSW.
