I’m on an extremely tight budget. I want to find a very inexpensive photographer.
I spoke with one on the phone today and he sounds great. We’ll be meeting this week. I really like his website and the way he described his work sounded good…
He charges $200 an hour (He is charging me only for 6 hours even though he’ll be there for 7, long story — has to do with my hours and location), and $250 for the disc package. So basically the whole thing would be $1450 for shooting and the package.
If this is indeed reasonable and I like him, I’ll take him. Is this reasonable? Because iIf there’s even better out there in terms of pricing I want to go for it.
What do you think?

Does the package come with any prints?
My package costs $3800. That includes bridal pics, engagement, and wedding day. Plus, we get tons of pics.

It seems really reasonable to me. I would have to see his work though before I could decide. Photographer prices vary by region, so if I were you, I would call a couple more to see what the median price is in your area for the same type of package.

That is fairly standard for reasonable photogs in our area. A lot regarding your question depends on the area.

You can find students or photographers starting out that are building portfolios and working for free; you can find artists charging $15K and up.
A lot depends on location, but so much is relative to the actual ability of the photographer him/herself. I’ve seen photographers charging a few grand that I’d pay to keep AWAY from a wedding; and I’ve seen folks charging $1k that I’d pay much more for.
Without seeing samples of work, it’s impossible to determine how good of a deal you’re getting.
Regarding your package–I would also make sure that your disk would be of edited images (i.e., the photog won’t just shoot and burn, and give you a bunch of snapshots; unless s/he is proficient enough that the SOOC images are gorgeous).

I’m paying $1300 for my package, but it comes with slightly less shoot time. I wasn’t planning on paying that much and thought about settling for the same thing you’re getting with unlimited shoot time for $500 with a mediocre photographer, but I fell in love with our photographer and am willing to pay a little more than I was planning previously. I agree with pps about not going with a shoot and burn photographer, because if they take as many pictures as I’m sure they will, it’ll be too much for you to go through on your own and you’ll just get sick of looking at your own pictures. I know our *new* photographer has a winter special package for about $900 that has the same deal as your package. I live in North Idaho/CDA/Spokane area though, so it might be different based on where you live.
