My POS dad used to do this to us all the time as kids oh there is 50 dollars on the gift card then we go to go shopping and there is 15. It got to the point that we called and checked the balance so we wouldnt get that OH SHIT moment… Its something I think you should do EVERYTIME you get a gift card…

My fiance’s aunt and uncle did this to us one Hanukkah.  We get them nice presents every year and we usually get re-gifts or some other tacky thing (matching embroided poker sweatshirts?) but one year we got a joint gift that was a Best Buy gift card with $37.63 cents or some random amount like that.  We have since starting giving family gifts to their family of 6 and spend under $50 since we get such horrible things.

Or maybe someone stole some of the balance, some of the companies have had issues with this in the past.

That exact thing happened to us! We got a $50 gift card from a guest (unfortunately we got a few for the same amount so we don’t know which one cam from who) and it had $8.26 on it… seriously? $8.26? That isn’t a snafu, that is using our card!!!

I’d never heard of this…I can’t believe someone would do that, it’s not like there’s anyway to save face doing it =O The person will obviously know what you did…so weird.

It might be that the card sat too long without being used.  Sometimes retailers will take $5 or $10 per month from the card after it hasn’t been used for like 6 months or something.  She should check with the retailer’s gift card policies to see if that’s what might have happened before she gets mad at her coworker, it might not be that she used it before she gave it to her…

I’ve seen several news stories lately of theives getting records of gift card numbers and stealing the balances from them.

@amyisnice:  Yeah it’s pretty ridiculous!  I’ve only heard of a few places that do it though, most major retailers don’t.  But if she got it last Christmas and just used it recently, it’s a possibility…

I second the above poster who said the company can take off money if you don’t use it each month.  I have one like that.  It’s fine for awhile, and then they start deducting from the balance!

I say that because it’s a round number…it’s not like there’s $9.46 left on it or something!  Then it’s obviously been used.

It’s likely that she used the card and forgot. I usually buy a few extra gift cards every holiday in case I forget a present or need extras. Then these cards sit around my house and I eventually use them. I can totally see how the slightly used card might have gotten mixed up and she forgot she already spent it (or perhaps someone gave the coworker a used gift card and she unknowingly re-gifted it)

That is really nuts and I’ve never heard of that happening before, but I think it’s slightly unfair to assume that the person was being tacky and rude. Perhaps there was some glitch in the store’s computer system, or maybe she had a partially used gift card of her own and accidentally put that one in the card rather than a new one she had purchased as a gift. You never know; I just would hate to assume that if there had been an issue with a gift card I gave that the person who receieved it would automatically think I was insulting them.

Hmmm some good points made by the above posters

– Lots of gift card fraud, these days you can just snap a pic of the barcode with your phone.

-Some companies deduct from your balance, you don’t know when they acutally purchased the gift card.

-she may have multiple gift cards of her own and for purchase used for gifts. I have  3 victoria secrets cards, 2 dunkin donuts, a few randoms going at once, its easy to mess up an unused from a partially used.

But I’m sure there are plenty of wack people that think its okay to re gift a partially used gift card! Who knows!
