Unless the wedding invites said it was formal or black tie, I’d probably stick with a cocktail dress as opposed to an evening gown just to be safe.

@Imhisbride:  I wouldn’t wear a dress similar to the links unless it was black tie.

Is it black tie? Or is it just more formal? I would take the dress back and look for a cocktail length one if possible. I feel like the dresses in those links are a little too much even in black.

@Firinne:  I prefer navy, but I agree.  If you’re not a dress girl have one as a staple you can dress up and down.

I don’t think the dresses in the links are too formal, but definitely wedding-formal. I wear long dresses quite a lot though. BUT I do think they might go out of style quite quickly if you’re unlikely to wear it often.

@Imhisbride:  I really think you might be one of the few ladies wearing a long dress if it’s not black tie – at least in my experience.  If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on purchasing a dress, why don’t you rent one from rent the runway?

I love the first one! I say go with what you’ll feel comfortable in. The first is less formal than the second.

If it’s not black tie, people usually wear semi-formal cocktail dresses.  I think you would be overdressed in a floor length gown

I think the first one would be good, but the second is too much.

I doubt you’ll be the only one in a long gown, I know a lot of people are uncomfortable in short dresses and wouldn’t wear one. Don’t wear something you’re uncomfortable with.

There are definitely full length dresses out there that are less formal. I’ll post some links when I get home from work.
