I am not sure what the average price for a DJ is. I am sure it also varies by location (I am in Cali) but I figured I would ask.
6 Hours $1300
Ceremony Piano $300
Cocktail Hour $100

Ours is $1395 total for unlimited time (reception and cocktail hour) and two in-person planning sessions with the dj.
If you are in the Bay Area, I highly recommend you check out Jason Spencer. He has been the one vendor who was surpassed my expectations and not brought me any stress! He has been AWESOME so far!

Our DJ is $850 for the ceremony and a 4 hour reception. He usually charges $1500 for that much time but he did my FSIL’s wedding, so he offered us the “family discount”.

Our DJ is $600 for 7 hours – including cocktail, dinner and dance. He includes his light show and MCing in this price too. i’ve been to other weddings of his and he’s really good – always people dancing.

We were really lucky to find a DJ in our area that charges $650 for unlimited hours and consultations and an extra $50 for the ceremony (he said the fee is just to move his equipment up the stairs)

I have been perplexed by this question myself and have asked friends. I get a consistent answer of between $1,500 to $2,000 for 5 hours. I am still shocked by the sticker price!

$900 for 6 hours. We got a deal though because it is a friend of a friend. Most places I researched were upwards of 1200-1500.

I’m not sure where in California your wedding is, but in socal prices are ridiculous! I ended up having a friend who’s a DJ do ours. ($600 for 5 hrs) Searching for DJs was the WORST! They give you a 20 min long schpeel about how great their service is and try not to even give you a price! Finally I found out they charge about what you’re quoted, @Tessemasgirl. I would keep looking. Good Luck!
