    Very important for us! We are having an evening candlelit ceremony. So, it will be pitch black. Our aisle will be lined with hundreds of Candles. However, without ample and strategic uplighting, none of our photos would probably turn out properly. So, for us, it’s crucial. We bought and will be installing our own, though…. And using them for our landscaping after the wedding.

    I don’t think I’ve ever been to a wedding where there wasn’t any uplighting, so I can’t give you any perspective on how it affects the overall feel of the evening, but I will say that for us personally, it truly is a must have just from looking at our venue and seeing it with and without the lighting.

    @BrideToBe14:

    Do you know what up lighting is?  You can’t “uplight” a dancefloor.  If someone encouraged you to uplight your tables I would be very leary of advice from that person, especially if it is a vendor.  I would be put off to sit at an uplit table.  And you asked about spotlighting a cake but your umbrella question is about uplighting, so I’m confused.  It sounds like you’re being sold a bill of goods by a quack or untrustworthy vendor.  I would learn more about lighting and exactly what I’m bring quoted or promised if I were you.

    A lot of these pictures are of colorwash lighting not regular uplighting. Colorwash is super saturated and the entire room looks colored.  Regular uplighting only highlights certain spots along the wall, ceiling or a specific thing.  Some colorwash actually hurts my eyes.  But I like uplighting.

    I”m confused how it’s so expensive?? I told our decorator that I want the room to “glow” in purple uplighting.. I agree that it eliminates the need for a lot of other decor.  For our venue (it’s not huge, but big enough for our 150) she said we’d need 8-10 uplights and they’re like 10-20 bucks a light… I can’t remember what exactly but definitely under $25 a light… I don’t get why its costing 2000?  Maybe it’s more in the states, or if you’re doing more than just the walls.  Our backdrop doesn’t need uplighting, just the walls

    @MrsPhilly:  I agree with you that I don’t know why their quote is so high.  My daughter just had her wedding and I think the dj brought the uplights for something like $200 or $300.  It was small compared to the overall cost of the dj.

    I think uplighting is pretty, but its not a necessity for us. We’re on a tight budget ($6000) so we’re just sticking with things we absolutely need.

    @BrideToBe14:  I have no idea where to get it yourself… Does your DJ offer it as well?  I Know I have the option of getting out DJ to do the lighting or the decorator…. but the prices seemed about the same and I figure the decorator would do a better job.  OUr lighting situation obviously seems much simpler than yours, but I’m still not sure that I understand why it would be thousands.

    The string lights for the trees, could you not just use xmas lights?  What about renting lighting units from someone who isn’t a wedding decorator… like…, maybe film production places or event decor stuff?  I have no idea if that would work or not.  But could look into it
