I think I have found my new caterer. However, I have about an extra $1000 in add ons that no one else quoted me on. So I wanted to check on two of these specifically to see if you had heard of getting charged for these.
So have you heard of getting charged for the chaffing dishes, bowls, platters, and serving utensils that are needed to serve your food? I personally think these should be included. Before I debate this with them I wanted to know if I am wrong.

We got charged (or rather had to rent) all of those as well. Our venue had nothing included so we had to rent all serving pieces, glasses, china, flatware and just about everything else other than the tables and chairs.
I thought they(the caterer, especially since they own 2 restaurants) would have provided those things as part of the package too, but nope.

Short answer, No.
It sounds like you may be having a buffet. We had a sit down dinner but only paid rental fees on things we needed, the caterer did not hcarge us for anything like that. We had a flat fee of $5 per person for dishes, glasses and silverware. In fact, the caterer didn’t even charge us for the linen for their serving table. We had several passed aps but did not need to pay for serving trays.

I think some places have them built into the price with the food and others do them separate.

Thanks. I had just assumed that he had to have a way to get the food to the location. I guess maybe it isn’t abnormal. I just wonder about the price he is charging though because I saw that we could rent some of it WAY cheaper then he is charging. HMMMM how tacky is it to say “We will go with you but I will rent the needed items”

We had a buffet at our rehearsal dinner and they did not charge us for these. It was specifically included in the price.

My caterer is not charging me extra for these.

@Nola: I’d ask about it anyway. I’m sure you wouldn’t be the first to question it.
Ours was in a beach town and had only one rental company available to deal with, but the prices we were charged were the exact same on the rental company’s site, so there was no mark up.

We are having a plated dinner and are being charged for the food and for the china, cups, silverware, servers, and main grill cook (they grill to order on site). The cost of each plate includes whatever the caterers need to cook with or serve with. I’m pretty sure if we went with a buffet dinner, it is still the same rented items except we wouldn’t have to pay the grill cook. The serving items are included in the per person cost.
My best friend had a buffet and all the buffet utensils and serving dishes were included with the per person price for the catering.
I would see if you could negotiate that down, or double check and see if their per person price is cheaper than other places you are considering that may include an upcharge on the per person for the use of thier equipement.
