Of the two, I’ve only been to Jamaica. I stayed in Negril last summer and loved it! I think in both places you will be able to find a ton of activities. I think the difference will be in the vibe. So many people go to islands such as Jamaica and are disappointed. What they don’t realize before going is that 4 and 5 star accommodations in Jamaica are not what they may be elsewhere. dont get me wrong, our accommodations were fabulous but we love the island vibe and the local way of life. I feel like I’m making no sense. It’s too early 🙂

@lealorali:  I’m going to Isla next month – so I’ll let you know!  But, I’ve been to other places in Mexico.  Jamaica’s okay.  You really can’t go wrong with either one if you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive, warm vacation with an excursion or two thrown in.  The draw to Isla for us was it’s a small island and we’re hoping it will be a little quieter, and couples-friendly!

@lealorali:  Happy to answer any questions I can.

It’s a super laid back place. You’ll need to get a cab or driver from the airport to the ferry (I have a regular driver we’ve been using for 6+ years, if you’d like his info) and take a ferry from Cancun across to Isla and go from there. I’d suggest budgeting to rent a golf cart for the whole time so you’ve got transportation. Even though cabs are super cheap ($3-5) to go just about anywhere, the connivence of having your own golf cart to tour the island and go places is just so much better.

We love Rolandi’s for nice dinner, Pizza Rolandi’s (in town) for pizza and casual. Super Tacoria is also really good. There’s a new restaurant that just opened a couple of years ago outside the entrance to Villa Vera (the yacht club) – a little hole in the wall on the side of the road and it is SO good! Jax (in town) is owned by Americans, and we normally don’t eat there because it’s more americanized we did pop in for a late lunch not too long ago and I had a fantastic shrimp taco.

Casa de los Suenos is a boutique hotel with an awesome spa if you want a massage. Also at that end is the Dolphin Discovery for Dolphin swimming, the turtle farm, and Garrafon for zip lining and snorkeling.

Oh…and the Lobster House (in town) is a MUST do for breakfast, they’re known for their killer french toast.

OOoooh another bee posted pictures from her trip to Isla de Mujeres!

You can read about it here.

It looked gorgeous and made me want to go there! Maybe it’ll help you make your decision.

I have not been in either of this islands, but what I new is that they are very nice. Anyway I have hear that jamaica is very turistic but it have not very safe parts of the island.

We have been in turks and caicos in our honeymoon, we rent a private villa (3000$/week) and it was awesome! best trip ever! it is a very nice island with incredible beaches, and it is also very safe. We rent a car and we went everywhere just the two of us without any problem. If the villa don’t fits your budget (I hightly recomended it, they you can cook your own meals, so the price is less than in an hotel) you have very nice hotels with better prices.

If you want to know more I have just make a post about it on my personal blog: http://www.aplacetogetlost.com/place-lost-in-turks-caicos/.

Anyway if you decided jamaica or isla mujeres I am sure you are going to have an amazing time!

Jamaica!! I’ve been to both Mexico and Jamaica and there’s no comparison IMO. Jamaica is paradise, Mexico is, well Mexico. Unless I was going to a super nice (more than 5*) resort in Mexico or if someone got married and I had to go, I probably will never go to Mexico again. I have heard good things about Isla though.

Have you checked Trip Advisor? I always go through the guest pictures on there before making a decision on a destination.

@lealorali:  no help here, just posting to keep an eye on what others have to say. We’re planning our elope-ment on isla Mujeres at the Privilege Aluxes on Playa Norte & would love to hear recommendations/reviews as well! Do you have your hotels narrowed down yet- if so which ones in Isla are you considering?

@lealorali:  i have been to Isla Mujeres. It’s great! But there isn’t a whole lot to do there other than going to the beach. If you are lloking for more “activities”, I’d do jamaica.

That being said, in general I prefer Isla Mujeres. The people there are really nice and it’s fun to interact with them, whereas the locals in Jamaica can be really mean (in my experience).
