I followed up with customer service again to no avail, but I got an e-mail from Amazon customer service early this morning saying that my account had been compromised and that any pending orders would be canceled and that my gift card balance would be restored. A few hours later my account showed that $175 had been added which is only about $25 short of what it should be.
Then I got a call from an executive customer service rep that told me Jeff Bezos (the CEO) had received my e-mail and they wanted to make things right. She hadn’t seen that my account had been compromised yet and was willing to refund the money, but I was honest and told her that a majority of it had been refunded already. She looked into my account further and saw that someone had logged into my account and requested via the chat feature that the gift cards be transfered to another account, claiming to be me.
She’s going to refund an additional $30 and apologized for what happened and for how I’d been treated by basically being accused of being dishonest.
