Never been to Dubai, but would love to hear where you’re going in Italy!

I live in Abu Dhabi, and subsequently have spent quite a bit of time in Dubai.

I guess my first question would be… why?  What are your expectations and what would you like to do?  Then I can answer if you’d enjoy it or not.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Dubai.  The traffic and driving is insane.  There are quite a few ‘proper discos’ i.e. clubs, and lots of really expensive designer stores which is not exactly what I’m into.  Want to get into the Burj Al Arab?  That’ll take advanced reservations and about $150 for tea.  Sure the Burj Khalifa (or Burj Dubai, depends on who you’re talking to) is neat… but the view is mostly a lot of desert.  You can pretty much see both buildings and Ski Dubai in a single afternoon.  Other things to do in Dubai… take a Dhow cruise down the creek.  About 6 months out of the year the weather is not conducive (September is still extremely hot and very, very humid) and it’s not that exciting as the creek is along ‘old Dubai’ & Diera, i.e. circa 1980.  HOWEVER, if you just want to hang out on a beach or in front of a pool, and do some shopping, you can definitely enjoy Dubai.  But then again, this is a country with very strong decency laws and you will be on your honeymoon if you get my drift.

Personally, I would skip it and spend the extra time in Italy.

I live in Kuwait so have also done Dubai quite often.  Tamin is mostly right.  There’s not much to it, but I think you can have a fun couple of days there before you move on.

Laws you should watch out are really just ‘public decency’ ones.  No PDA, no drinking in public, don’t insult anyone (it’s always tempting to give the crazy drivers the finger.  Don’t.  You can end up in jail), don’t insult the religion, leaders, etc.

What sort of things do you and your hubby like to do?  I enjoyed the water park in Dubai for a few hours.  I definitely enjoyed the desert safari when I did it.  Skiing indoors is pretty fun. Besides that clubbing, and shopping, there’s not much else I’ve done there.  But I’m happy to give suggestions if you give me an idea of what you like to do.

It’s too bad you’re going to miss the Dubai 7s.  Those are always a riot…for me at least.

You’ll definitely find things to do for your three days then.

Dubai 7s is a big international rugby tournament.  It’s basically a giant party.  There’s people dressed up, beer, rugby, and lots of fun πŸ™‚

My old roommate spent her honeymoon in Dubai and they stayed at Burj al Arab.  And her husband got in trouble by the cops for kissing his her in public.  They were just there.

@rdownie1:  Agreed! Dubai is amazing!! My parents lived there for a few years and I used to go and stay with them for extended periods (a few months at a time) and I absolutely love the place!

I’ve been lucky enough in my time to visit a number of different countries each with different cultures but Dubai was absolutely one of my favourites. There is so much to do and it’s not like anywhere else.

While you have to be respectful of the culture it’s no where near as strict as people think it is. Love it love it love it. I’ve had a number of friends go after hearing me rave about it and they’ve all loved it too! Totally worth the extra stay if stopping over, I can’t wait to take my SO as he’s never been, I know he’ll love it too!
