@ajillity81:  We stayed in two different rooms in a tiny hotel in Cinque Terre, one room had a queen bed, the other had two twins. We rented an apartment in Florence with queen beds (it had TWO bedrooms for a little over $100 night). Unless you are spending A LOT of money my impression is that hotels in Italy are much more basic than hotels in the US. The apartment was an amazing value for the money – way better than a hotel! We found it on flipkey.com. If you plan to stay more than one or two nights in a city, I strongly recommend renting an apartment!

Are you absolutely set on booking through an agent? I’ve gone to Europe quite a few times and always do everything myself.

Do you know what parts of Italy you want to go to? Tuscany is one of my favorite areas and its so easy to rent a car and drive around the countryside and small hilltowns. Last time we were there we stayed in a B&B that was fabulous and really not that expensive at all. Our room had a queen bed. Fabio and Suzanne are EXCELLENT hosts, here is the website for the B&B: http://www.follonico.com

In all of the hotels I’ve ever stayed at in Italy we’ve always found queen/king beds…

Where are you going in Spain? We stayed in some great places when we were in Barcelona & Seville in 2011. I can’t remember the names off of the top of my head, but I can get the info if you’re interested.

The Regina Palace in Stressa is one of the best places I stayed in Italy.  The location (Stressa) I felt was the most romantic place I had ever been (even moreso than Venice, and I loved Venice).

Here are a few pics from my trip about two years ago.  There are hotels up and down from here, so hopefully you’ll find one you love and in your budget.

View from the front of the hotel garden/patio:

Take a short ferry trip to Bella island (across from the hotel), and be showered in roses and peacocks!

Sorry for all the pics! But I really loved it here. I was not with my Fiance, but dream of taking him here!

@ajillity81: Forgot we stayed at a hotel in Milan for 1 night too. It was definitely the most luxurious hotel we stayed at, but still not as nice as the apartment in Florence. http://www.grandviscontipalace.com/ We had a queen bed and it was 170ish/night.
