I don’t know if this is normal or not, but everytime winter rolls around my arms and especially my legs get ridiculously itchy.. like RIDICULOUSLY itchy. I’m starting to wonder if I have some form of eczema or skin issue. I’m a scratcher too, so I’ll scratch the crap out of something even though I know it makes it worse. This only happens during the wintertime.
Here’s the thing.. I use Dove soap, don’t take super hot or super long showers… I’m not allergic to any detergents/soaps (not that I know of).. I’ve tried several different types of lotions… I’m at a loss.
Yesterday, it was so bad I actually resorted to smearing olive oil on my legs haha! I didn’t have body oil 🙁 Then I put on knee-high socks to lock in the moisture. Amazingly, this seems to work wonders.
Does anyone have other (more normal) remedies?

Put on your lotion BEFORE you dry off when you get out of the shower. It will also help lock in the moisture. Make sure to exofliate to get the dead skin off as well!

coconut oil! yep, the kind you cook with…slather it on during/after every shower! also before you go to bed.

@romantical: Have you tried Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula?
I also have luck w. Body Shop body butters… they’re pretty thick & rich.
Try some body oil and put it on while your skin is still damp out of the shower. And reapply at night.
I have the same problem as you… I just keep slathering the stuff on haha, it doesn’t seem like anything is a miracle fix for me unfortunately. Stupid dry skin and Canadian winters!!

Oatmeal products! Aveeno has good stuff, their oatmeal bath is great, followed up with lotion. In the winter my legs itch sooo bad like yours, this stuff helps calm it.

Thanks ladies! So I’m gonna slather on coconut oil and lotion before stepping out – check! (And use Gold Bond lotion if that doesn’t work)
@canarydiamond: I’ve tried Palmer’s and Body Shop products too.. those Body Shop butters smell divine, but I usually end up scratching everything off haha!

When we switch over to using heat in the winter everything dries out. Using Aveeno body wash helps, slatering on the lotion right after showering/bathing like a pp suggested does wonders. Also, drink plenty of liquids to keep your skin hydrated. You might also want to look at placing a humidifier in your bedroom to run overnight while you sleep.

the green bottled gold bond is definatley the best! But I know what really works…It smells like crap, BUT it will help. A&D ointment. The one that smells like a dead fish. Not the lotion, the “ointment”. It WILL work.

The lotion I use is Alba Botanical “Very Emollient” — it comes in a huge bottle with a pump top. I love it.

A few options work for me.. Ultrabalm by Lush, Ro’s Argon by Lush, and the navy blue Nivea Skin Milk lotion. Also drink loads of water.

I’m a big fan of Carley’s Exotic Butter moisturizer during the winter. It’s the only thing that keeps my hands and elbows from getting completely dried out and flaky and cracked.

Try using Aveeno oatmeal bath. I also like the Body Shop Body Butter but it’s so expensive! I can’t use it everyday or I’d go broke. Gold Bond is pretty awesome all around, too.
I like Jergens Firming Lotion and Nivea firming lotion. For an excellent exfoliating lotion, try Amlactin. My Fiance gets terrible keratosis from dry skin and that works very well for him.

I have extremely sensitive skin and contact dermatitis galore! My skin in winter literally scales off its so painful. I use Alba Cocoa Butter lotion. Works great and smells great. The only other one that works for me is vanicream but it doesnt smell as nice. I wash with dove sensitive bar, or vanicream bar as well.
