@Nona99:  +1000! AHAHAHA! I tend to tell my mom things like that when she talks out her ass.

Love my three stone sapphire. Guess I am not “really” engaged then…

Grrrr! Just let it roll off your back. Any ring that is used to propose marriage, symbolizing the love you & your Fiance share, is an engagement ring.

@musician32992:  I got quite a few snide remarks about my ring.. I do not have a halo, nor a split shank, but I do have other diamonds on my band… And my feature stone is black.. but it is a diamond.. My grandmother took a LONG LONG time to warm up to the fact that I am not the traditional type.. She’s also still pissed I’m not getting married in a church *shrug*

eta: Here is my non-engagement ring 😛

I believe a “real” engagement ring is any ring that a couple uses to represent their engagement.  Whether it’s a 1 ct round solitaire, a halo style ring, sterling silver w/cz, a 1.2 ct moissy, or a colored gemstone.

My ring is an emerald surrounded by diamonds.  Every now and then someone will ask if it’s my birthstone and I simply answer, “It’s my engagement ring.  My fiance and I wanted something non-traditional.”  Some people think it’s a neat idea and some have no real reaction.  But it’s very real to me and that’s what’s most important.

@musician32992:  WOW that is hurtful! I would educate her on the history of engagement rings. Solitaire diamonds are a fixture of the 21st century as an ad campaign! Traditionally engagement rings varied greatly and most importantly were not even diamonds!
