Something is wrong with our phone system, and for some reasons calls will randomly go from being on hold to going into one woman’s voicemail all by themselves. The caller will then call back and scream at me for putting them in her voicemail, when I was on the other line talking to someone else and didn’t even touch the phone. The people in my office thought it was just me being stupid, but finally believed it wasn’t me when it started happening to them, too. There are still some people in this office who think I’m doing it on purpose and don’t believe me when I tell them something is wrong with the phone.
I’m getting pretty tired of getting screamed at for something that’s completely out of my control. I told my boss about it, and she had someone come out to look at the phone and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it..of course…
It happened to my 3 times this morning and I’ve been making a list of every time it happens, with the date, the time, the line number, and the caller. I don’t know what else to do. Should I go over my boss’s head? She’s not taking it seriously, but I find it very frustrating.

Yes– call your IT department directly, obviously this is a real problem that’s causing issues in your office. It needs to be fixed, and it needs to be taken seriously.

that is very frustrating but DO NOT take this over your bosses head. That will seriously burn bridges with her. Go to her about it with the notes you take today. if she still shrugs it off, then ask her who else she suggestions you bring the attention to because it is upsetting customers and affecting your work and has to be addressed.

@juliette.eliza: We don’t really have an IT department. We have one girl, and she’s not very helpful. She already looked at the phone and called the phone company to come out and run a scan of the phone and everything checked out. 🙁

@OneOfTheseDaysAlice: ut finally believed it wasn’t me when it started happening to them, too.
Have them go to her with their complaints too so she realizes it’s the phone system. Have your co-workers document the time and caller etc… too!

How annoying. This happens to me, sort of–I’ll transfer a call and tell the person they have a call, and if they take too long to answer or the caller had already been on hold, the caller will sometimes hang up after I transfer and the person gets mad because there’s no one there.
ETA: I just saw that you don’t really have an IT department. That’s lame. Just keep doing what you’re doing, document the calls, and keep talking to your boss.

@vorpalette: Yeah, it’s weird. Usually with our calls, if you transfer a call to a specific person, it’ll ring and then go to their voicemail. The weird part is that a call will be on hold and then it will transfer itself to a specific voicemail, which is this woman that works upstairs. She used to get so pissed at me because she thought I was just an idiot who didn’t know how to work the phones. Once she realized it wasn’t me doing it, she apologized. It’s just so weird that it’s only her voicemail and no one else’s when the calls are for all different people. She tried changing extension numbers, and the calls still followed her. I don’t get it.
