Ugh.. I know lots of us bigger girls have had a hard time with dresses. Today it was pretty much the same story that has been told a million times over.
I am so discouraged!
I called a local salon (please note that I live in Idaho where there are ZERO plus size specific places for wedding dresses) and set up a time to come and meet with them and try dresses on. I gave the lady a couple ideas of the dresses I liked, the size I was and anything else that I could think of. I was actually kinda looking forward to going in today. The dress is kinda one of those things where it makes it all really real ya know.
So I get there and she pulls out books and gets on websites and talks about the dresses that she thinks would work for me and blah blah, yet she has NOTHING and I mean NOTHING for me to try on! She grabbed a couple dresses and opened the bodice up and kinda held it up to me to “see how it looks, ya know hun get an idea” and she only did that with 2 dresses!
I asked about veils and some other stuff and it just didn’t seem like she wanted to help me, but that she was more interested in having me have a dress custom made from Casablanca. She kept saying “well hun, ya know I could call and have them send me a dress kinda like the one you like, but it’s gona cost ya 25 dollars, but ya know hun, it won’t be in your size” If she called me hun one more time I thought I was going to snap! Or something like “The dress you are thinking of (which she ment she was thinking of) will be X dollars, but don’t forget it will be an extra 50 dollars because of your size”
So it’s offical Bees… If something doesn’t change in how I am feeling about getting a dress then I shall be going naked to my own wedding….

Yuck…it sounds like you just had a shitty consultant. Is there a way for you to travel out of state to find a shop that carries plus-size samples? I’m sorry you had such a bad experience.

Could you have a dress made for you? I don’t know what size you are, but I’ve found some fabulous dressmakers.
Plus size girls look fantastic in proper steel boned corsets because it squishes everything into the right place. While I’m not saying you’d want to go for a coloured gown, I absolutely lusted over this website for inspiration long before I was engaged. They have girls of all sizes on the site and most of their models are plus-size.
Here’s a picture of their favourite model in jeans and in her dress, but they have pictures of much larger ladies in their dresses.

Is there an Alfred Angelos around? If I remember correctly, they carry a lot of stuff up to like a size 30. Also, David’s Bridal will probably give you a lot of size options to at least figure out what you want.
Maybe you need to plan a trip with just you and like your mom, or Maid/Matron of Honor and go to a large-ish city with a plus size salon. Rather than pay $25 a pop for dresses to be shipped in from here and there, just go to where they will have lots of dresses in your size.

@Corona00: oh my goodness! that is horrible 🙁 I hate that people are so rude! Is it possible you travel somewhere else to try on dresses?
ETA: I second the Alfred Angelos. I went to one of their stores and they had TONS of beautiful plus sized dresses 🙂

I had that same experience. I think they feel like they have to tell you that because if they don’t they will get burned and you will throw a fit when you are surprised that it costs more. I just ended up ordering online.

That’s how the first place I went was and I was totally discouraged, almost ruined my dress shopping experience. I had called ahead and asked if they carried dresses in my size to actually try on, well when I showed up they had 2 dresses in my size (horribly ugly I might add) and then told me I could try a size 10 (I’m a dress size 20) but wouldn’t help me out with it and then when it wouldn’t fit over my boobs, they told me to just hold it up in front of me. HORRIBLE!!! But I went to Alfred Angelo’s after that and they were great and had tons for me to try on. I later went to David’s Bridal and they also had tons for me to try on, I ended up buying my dress from Alfred Angelo.

I’m so sorry that you expeirenced this.. This is exactly why the shop I bought my dress from opened.. It’s a fully PLUS size shop.. I wish you lived closer, b/c they’d give you an experience worth driving too!! I’m from Michigan.. See if you can locate an Alfred Angelo(they go up to 30), Davids Bridal, or house of brides. House of brides carries plus size.. If you’d like i can link you to my shop, and they have a list of wedding dress makers that make plus size dresses.. send me a private message if you’re interested.

This is what I immediately thought of when I saw your thread:

I think it may be worth planning a trip to a more curve-friendly shop. The treatment you received sounds pretty craptastic.

@Goodatlove: Those must have been crazy wedding pictures.
OP, sorry to hear about the trip. 🙁 I hope you can find a better shop… maybe travel and make it a girl’s weekend or something?

@Corona00: I hate when people call me ‘hun’, ‘sweetie’…..it’s really annoying and not the way to make a sale. I’m not sure what store you went to, but when I searched for stores that carry Alfred Angelo dresses, there is Bridal by Marie. On their website it states they carry dresses from size 2-30. Might be worth a try (unless that’s the store with “hun”). David’s bridal will have some larger sizes, but the customer service is very hit or miss.
It’s hard being a larger size, I’m a size 18 and there were a lot of dresses I would have loved to try on, but they so weren’t going to make it over my butt. Just keep looking, you will find a dress.

I wish you lived closer. I would so drive you to Curvaceous Couture myself. I wear a street size 16 and had the best experience with them. Only one dress in the whole store was to small on me, most I swam in. That was a great feeling let me tell you! I am so sorry you had such a horrible time. There is no excuse for her behaviour. I will be praying you find the right store even though I realize it will be one heck of a trip for you. Idaho is so huge and spread out. 🙁 Bad for wedding dress shopping.

@Corona00: Wow how rude. I wouldn’t giver her a penny of your money or your time. She obviously isn’t very good at her job. Someone working at a wedding dress shop should have a range of dresses for all different sizes and body shapes. And should also know what style would suit who best.
I hope you find the dress of your dreams. Or if you have a set idea in your mind which most girls usually do. Have your dress custom made. And make it perfect for you. Post us a picture when you do 🙂
I’m guessing that company isn’t going to last very long

Wow You had a bridal consultant who was a major bitch!!! I’m a 18 (who was a 22 when I got my dress – a Maggie). You WILL find a dress. I would complain about the experience that you had and write a review as well. Don’t be discouraged! xoxox
