You could definitely start dress shopping, and thinking about colour scheme etc.

My dress came in one month before my wedding, and they managed to get the alterations done in time.

i’d start looking at photographers! they can book up really fast. that was definitely the hardest vendor for us to book–half the ones we contacted were already booked when we tried about 9 months in advance, one even got scooped out from under us when we were considering whether to book or not…

alterations and such depend on the designer and seamstress. i ordered mine about 8 months out

and, congratulations!!!!

I would look for the photographer and caterer.  Those are the largest expenses and they usually book up quickly.

Don’t worry about alterations yet.  I started mine 2 months before the wedding and was fine.

Maybe they meant that it takes 8-9 months to get the dress in after you order it.  Salons always quote that number but my dress came in after a few months.

honestly? I was as lost as you are and what put me on track is weddingwire.com they include a great timeline that you can check off, a budget tracker for how much everything should cost and tracking payments, a seating chart, guest list, invite tracker, etc. My wedding is June 2012

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!  🙂  I recommend the timeline on weddingwire.com too.  However, you’ll feel slightly overwhelmed because they give you like 230 tasks!  But, since you’re booking early, you’ll get a lot of things crossed off the list before their timeline even starts!  Here’s what I did, in this order:

Venue first (came with a caterer, linens, lights, etc)

DJ and ceremony music next

Photographer, then

Officiant, then

Dress (I wanted to wait on this one, but I just couldn’t!  I was excited haha)

Color Scheme

Booked my hair appointment for my girls and I (super early, but my salon books FAST on Saturdays for weddings in June)

I still haven’t done flowers or a cake, and I’m looking for bridesmaids dresses right now, although I know I’m way early on it.  I want to be able to have things done and out of the way ahead of time though.

I would book your photographer and dj/band next. Then start looking for a dress! Then cake! Then look for a stylist for hair and makeup.. book all the things as early as possible.. they book super early now! congrats!

omg! congrats!!! that is so awesome:)  if you are doing any DIY (do it yourself) projects, get started asap, like RIGHT AWAY!!!!  (i am having a VR (vow renewal) in 2 years, and I have started. and making great progress…

do you have a budget?

have you made your guest list yet?

What about a wedding website?  (i’m using ourweddingday.com but wouldn’t recommend it, I am very technologically challenged and it seems a little challenging… but there are others out there)  I also created a group on FB.

Color Scheme?

Start dress shopping ASAP!  because what you think you like, you may not like, and vice versa…and it can take a while.  You do not have to buy now, but at least this will ive you an idea of what you like/want.  Explore all your options., and then shop around to see where you can save money:)

I would search caterers and DJs next after you have done this.  guest list is really important.  How many people do you want there?  Caterers are expensive (i just started researching them myself, YIKES)…

this website is a HUGE HELP!!! keep coming back and remember there are NO such thing as a stupid question.  Everyone here is great help.

yay for your engaement!!!!  ^5 congrats!

keep us posted, mainly i’m nosey and wanna know colors.  another Bee posted this website. It doesn’t have my colors on it (dark blue, light blue and orange) but it can give you tons of ideas

http://www.theperfectpaletteblog.com/p/color-palettes_17.html

also check out martha stewart weddings

So first, I would say, guest list, or at least an idea of how many people you are going to invite…
