It’s a great afternoon over here bees!
I just put down the deposit on our apartment for our move to Oregon next month.
This has been a really long road, so I’ll share our trials and tribulations with you all 🙂
About 6 months ago (before Fiance proposed), he and I were daydreaming about moving to Oregon, and living on the beach like hippies with not a care in the world. As we started thinking about all of the details (finding jobs, finding an apartment, blah blah) and the fact that we weren’t engaged yet, we decided it would be a dream we’d put on hold.
Fast forward a few months, Fiance decided he wanted to live up to his full potential with a job. Currently he is a police officer at the Napa State Hospital (criminally insane) and he seriously loathes his job. He does not have the normal rights that a ‘normal’ police officer would have (ability to use his baton, mase, etc.) because anytime they have to restrain a patient (what they call those animals), and they use their baton or mase, they have to go before a board of supervisors to explain why. They do not instill any trust in these police officers to do their jobs. It’s really frustrating because he has to literally wrestle these people to restrain them. It’s really emotionally and physically draining. Otherwise, he loves being a police officer, and all of the other great things about the job.
So, now that we’re engaged and have the wedding planning underway, we’re starting to think about the ‘what happens next’ part of our lives. Currently we live in his parents’ mother in law unit behind their house (it’s a full apartment, but it’s still too close for comfort!), and we really can’t afford to live in Napa on our own. We get a great rate from his parents, and could not fathom paying three times as much for a smaller apartment. BUT, we so do not want to live there when we are married!
So this is where we decided that the move to Oregon is what we want. We hunted out all of the areas that are hiring for police jobs out there, and came up with a few great counties. We went on a road trip, and decided that Corvallis, OR (where Oregon State University is) would be perfect for us! It’s gorgeous and has a great college town feel mixed with young families. It’s such an amazing community.
My boss is letting me keep my job and work from home, and Fiance has three more days at his job! The state owes him a TON of money for his vacation time and overtime checks they IOU’d him (Lovely California…) so we’ll have a little check in our pockets to move with.
Garage sale is this weekend, and we move on January 11th!
Bees, you have NO idea how excited we are to start our new lives together in Oregon 🙂
