I don’t know what’s “proper” but my fiance and I used registering for our cheap entertainment.  When we got bored, we’d go to the store and start zapping!  So we got started really early, about 10 months out from the wedding date.

We’re registered at a TON of places, but only 3 are being listed on our website and used as “official” registeries.  I don’t know, I had this crazy idea of “what if someone goes looking at ____ and wants to get our gift there?!”.  Three should be just fine!

You can go as early as you like to get the staples (appliances, kitchen stuff etc.) and then closer to the time you can register for the seasonal stuff that changes more (linens, etc.)

I am also getting married in August and we have set up two registries so far!

Have fun!

I think as long as you are registered before all your events you should be fine.  But try not to register too far in advance because some things may be discontinued and you will have to pick new things for your registry.  How many guests are you inviting?  We only had one registry because there weren’t a lot of things that we needed since we already had most of our home stuff and we were just looking to fill things in.  If you have a larger guest list and a few showers/engagement parties and a lot of things to get for your new place, then 3 registries should be fine!

I think the knot says the earliest you should register is like 8 or 9 months because there’s the possibility of stuff you register for being discontinued.  We registered in October and have already had a few things drop off our registry. 🙁  It’s a headache trying to replace things!

3 should be fine.  We registered at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Amazon.

Yay we’re date twins! I am not registered yet but we have to before we send out Save the Date’s. I would say just register and then at least you’re done. I’m registering at Macy’s, Williams Sonoma, BB&B, and possibly Bloomies (depends on Macy’s selection).

I say 4 to 5 months before.  Gives people time to buy you a gift if you have an early bridal shower.  But it’s also not too soon.  If you register too early then everything gets discontinued before your wedding and you wind up having to go through the whole process of registering again, which is not fun!

The reason people are asking is bc they probably want to buy you Xmas gifts.  If you want, you could register at one place now and just add a few things to the registry.  But I really wouldn’t add the rest until about 4 months before.

Also, I would advise you not to register at Macy’s.  They do have a lot of nice things, but their registries are not set up nicely at all.  The online registry system is a huge hassle and has 1/10 of the products that are on the normal website or in the store, they charge you and your guests a ton for shipping to get anything off the wedding registry online, the deals from the normal macy’s site don’t work on the online site, the people in the store are unhelpful, their registry completion discount doesn’t calculate the total guest purchases correctly or give you credit for everything, and the list goes on and on.  In short, Macy’s was a huge pain in the @$$ for us and our guests.

If I were you I’d think twice about Macy’s.  I would have done Amazon instead if I could go back and do it again.

You could probably go now if you want! Fiance and I went on the 5th. We just did one, though. We were there 2.5 hours and that wore us out! We will do some more another day!

My wedding is in July and my shower is in May. I just opened two registries online tonight (because I was bored). A family member suggested to me that I start registering as soon as people begin asking about it, and I had someone ask the other day.

I think our 3 choice were great as far as ease of registering on-line & in-store, registry events & benefits, fulfillment discounts & ease of returns.  (I would shy away from Target b/c of returns.) Crate & Barrel (registry party, free gift, 2 opportunities to use completion discount), Bed, Bath, & Beyond (coupons!, excellent return/exchange policy-they give you $ w/o receipts), Macy’s (great sales, registry party, free gifts, AWESOME bonuses/completion discount-you get a % of what you charge AND your guests spend/20% off completion discount.)  I loved our registries (I just made our final C&B purhase on 12/31!), and HIGHLY recommend them.  Good luck!!

We plan to register at WalMart for outdoor stuff (camping supplies, grills, patio sets, etc etc) and everything else at amazon.com!!  We live in a small midwest town that doesn’t offer any other “box” stores and the closest Target, Bed Bath and Beyond is about 2 hrs away.  I am loving the fact that Amazon has EVERYTHING that anyone could think of to register for…

We registered a month or so before our engagement party. We continue to update things as we get closer to the wedding but very few of the items we want have been discontinued. Plus I got some of the stuff on our registry for my birthday and Christmas!

Yay, more 8/7/10 brides!!!!

We registered in November and January, as my family is big on engagement gifts. We have three registries — might add a fourth as we can’t register for a vacuum or hand vac anywhere we picked!
