Classic mistake. I order my beautiful Alvina Valenta $3500 dress and the girl shows me my measurements and those of the size 8. My measurements were 36-28-36. The size 8 was 35.5-27-? I forget the hip size. Anyways. I look at the size 10 and it is indeed way more off than the size 8 and I say to her, I says “Aren’t I supposed to order it bigger anyway?” She tells me it’s gonna cost a lot to have alterations, several hundred dollars and that this is better. She is a professional. ok. I think she knows better than I do. She shows me what minor alterations can be made on my dress. ok. I order it. What I didn’t notice it that she typed into the notes on the receipt that my measurements were that of the size 8…not 36-28-36. I pick it up. um. Though I havn’t “gained” weight…im bigger. My boobs are 37 1/4 now ( never been that big) my waist 28 3/4, my hips 38. It BARELY ZIPS UP. They dont measure me or the dress they just tell me again that alterations can be made. ok. I pay. $3500. But ladies, because of the way it is sewn and how the lace is sewn into the hem, alterations CANT be made. not on the bust and waist anyways. ok. It is still a gorgeous $3500 dress. I dont really care that it will NEVER “lay right” on me cause the bust size is to small. It’s a shame though. My seamstress was like ” I can’t believe you aren’t crying!” why cry? It’s just a ( very expensive) dress. I’s is gettin MARR- IED! SO I am happy.
The waist buckles. I can BARELY zip it. But it can be zipped after 20 min of two people putting some muscle into zipping it.
SO ladies ( side note yes I am trying to LOSE WEIGHT which is stupid cause I weigh like 127 pounds I’m 5’2 and I like my body but glass half full I needed to tone up anyways)
If this happens to you and you were foolish to trust the sales lady and the dress doesn’t fit right: ask to speak to the mananger and in house seamstress BEFORE you sign off and pay ( SO DUMB of me) and have the dress measured in front of you, The only way it would be returned is if it is a manufacturers defect and indeed not the right size. I called the manager and she told me I had to drive there with the dress. Its about an hour drive and with traffic its closer to 2 hours. No. I will make do. I did tell her that her employee entered false information to cover her butt. I don’t know why, she HAD the sale. smh
oh and my alterations, the bustle, hemming, and hips being taken in, are only $150 not $500-$800 that she told me. Im getting married, I am wearing this darn dress whether it fits or not!!! 🙂

ugh! i’m sure that experience was frustrating!!!! I can’t believe the consultant didn’t listen to you…

The lady F***ed up, for $3500 you should get the dress you were promised in the correct size. What if you cannot lose enough weight/ tone up in time? I would fight this if I were you.

Is it only tight where the zipper is? Is it possible to have them alter it into a corset back which might give you a little more wiggle room? I think you’re pretty awesome if you’re not freaking out about it… I know I’d be pissed! Kudos for taking it in stride 🙂

I agree, See fi they can alter it in a a corsett back, it will give you a LOT more wiggle room.

It is their job to advise you on the correct sizing. She encouraged you to go with the smaller one even though you said “aren’t I supposed to order it bigger?” You really deserve some sort of refund because they screwed up to bad.
I agree with PP’s who suggest a corset back. You should NOT have to try to lose weight because of this person’s error!

Yes… I would be frustrated… And like pp, I was going to suggest possibly a corset back? I am a street size 12, but in Alfed Angelo, my waist and hips were a size 10 and my boobs were a size 12… The dress I ordered was a corset back, so we went with a 10 and the corset made it work perfectly!

I signed off on the the reciept. MY fault. I didn’t realize she falsified the measurements taken that day. And I AM bigger now. I am thinking of fighting the fact that she encouraged me to have it special ordered. I paid $250 for them to have it cut to my height. um…I still have to get it hemmed. Why the hell did I pay an extra $250? Weddings and everything that goes with them can be very emotional. I am more worked up that she lied and got an extra $250 out of me than the fact that the dress doesn’t fit. I know it will be fine. I plan to get my waist down to the 28 I know it was ( piece of cake) before I go in and have them see me in the dress. My bust will never be 35.5 though. And that’s why it will never “lay correctly”. sigh. It’s just a shame.
Manager says she won’t do a thing until she sees me in it. I’m like um the girl LIED about my measurements! of course when you measure me its not gonna fit! I just don’t get why she did it. smh. I HAVE to take it to be seen by THIER alterations lady for her to deem it not able to be taken out. But even then it’s not like I get a new dress. I told the manager that when the dress was too small, it should have been protocol to have the seamstress come in and check before they told me it could be taken out in the bust. Not just have the sales associate give me her opinion whom I trusted.

@Angelz_love: Have you tried it on while wearing Spanx? THey could solve your problem! My dress was a size 10 and a bit snug, so I tried on Spanx and they sucked in so much that the dress was actually too big! I ended up not wearing them because I didn’t want to dress to have to be altered more, but they might be the perfect solution for you.

I feel your pain!! The same thing happened to me… not the vendor’s fault necessarily, she wanted to order me one size when I was at my skinniest and I told her to go up a size and had to argue with her… I should have told her to go up 2 because now at my normal weight the “size up” from my skinniest is way too tight. They never showed me a size chart… and I never lose weight like that unless I am working around the clock, not eating, etc. like I was in the fall when I tried it on. I hate that my dress is now a source of stress (about not fitting into it!) rather than happiness!

For $3500 plus alterations I would want it to lay right. Heck, I would want it to look like it was custom cut for me! It’s not your fault that she ordered the wrong size for you (yeah you signed the receipt, but it wasn’t your job to verify your measurements IMO). I agree none of this makes sense!

Most wedding gowns can be let out at LEAST 1 inch, if not 2 inches. No problem. It’ll just cost you…probably at least a couple hundred dollars.

I would make them fix this – it is their fault, not yours! I would raise hell and tell them they better get a bigger size in ASAP because they made this mistake. Period. $3500 bucks is a TON of money so they better make it right. Period.

@Wonderstruck: girl, I considered buying a corset to wear under ( it has a boilt in corset but not a corset back) and aint NOTHING gonna fit under that material!
I was SWEATING and so was the seamstress trying to zip it up!
@smyrnabelle: 🙁 that sucks, I see your date is for 2013…maybe maybe maybe you can do it without stressing and just thinking of how much healthier you will be to get into that dress. I am consuming veggie juice and SUPER lean protiens and everything is organic and ONLY good carbs. I keep thinking “well, at least I am gonna be healthy!”
@Over the Moon: Your comment REALLY made me feel better. Thank you! I just wanted to hear someone say exactly that: yeah I signed the receipt but it was still somewhat their fault.
@crayfish: I hope so. It has lace over the satin and that lace is sewn INTO the hem of the front of the dress. And it has string sewn OVER that lace. It’s not just a piece of lace that can be lifted to let it out.
This is why I decided my best bet is to lose some inches off my waist. My cousin is a personal trainer and met with me on Sunday ( free of charge of course) And promises me a bikini body lol! what ever I just need to fit into my dress.
I refuse to let this stress me. I REFUSE! lol! glass half full ladies he loves me and really thats all that matters (She keeps repeating to herself) He doesn’t know about all this and if he did, he probably would have gotten me a refund and a new dress lol! ( he’s THAT guy who demands to speak to the manager and gets us refunds…soooooo embarassing!)

I am really sorry that happened to you!!! I am actually worried about the EXACT opposite! I ordered my Alvina Valenta in a 10 because they advised me to..but my measurements were 34-25-37.5…which was a size 8 on the chart. Now I’m nervous I will be paying an arm and a leg in alterations because it will be too big? Hmm..
