Personally I had spotting for about the length of a typical period. After that I actually was fortunate enough to not deal with a period or menstrual cramps for the duration of having the IUD in place. Miss it so much!

I had my IUD inserted the third day of my period, and for some reason it had the reverse effect and stopped my period all together. Didn’t bleed again for another 30 days, and it was the heaviest period of my life (copper IUD).

When I had my first Mirena placed I spotted for about six months. Ruined every pair of underwear I had until I finally understood it wasn’t ending and wore panty liners. But then I didn’t get a period for 4.5 years. Got a second one placed, no spotting at all and still no period for 2 more years.

kathymoreira :  Mine lasted for about 5 days after insertion but it wasn’t horrible, just annoying! Like PP, I also have the Paragard (over 4 years) and I had a heavy, crampy period for a couple of cycles after insertion. You should expect to have a longer heavier period with this method but after insertion it’s more intense. If you have a hormonal IUD then it will probably just be cramping and spotting after insertion and then level out.

When I got my Mirena, I had spotting to heavy bleeding off and on for a couple of months. Long enough that I considered having it taken out. It was gross and annoying but once it stopped, I really enjoyed not having a period for a few years. I’m pregnant right now but once our daughter is born, I plan to get another Mirena.

I have Paragard IUD (6 years). I think my spotting only lasted several days and the cramping for half a day. I don’t have spotting outside of my period- however my natural 4 day period is now 8 days. Cramping, breakouts and hormones are more intense too. I do sometimes have spotting/bleeding after sex but my gynecologist said that is normal for IUDs.

My strings are pretty short and I think they curl quickly. Don’t freak out if you like to check for your strings and you can’t feel them. The best thing to do is track your periods and pay attention in the first months. I think I read that an IUD is most likely to change position during the first few months after insertation.

I really love having a non hormonal form of birth control that is also very reliable. It’s worth it to me and I have gotten used to the changes. Just make sure to check your iron levels during your annual appts and take and iron supplement as needed. Due to the heavier bleeding some women report low iron levels- but it’s never been an issue for me.
