(Closed) I've had my ring valued and its much less than I thought it'd be.

Unless it’s an independent appraiser, there could be a conflict of interest.  i’m not saying this is the case, but some jewelers can ruin a sale by undervaluing the item.  unless they give you a signed report with his/her assessment of the piece, it’s just their opinion, they can say anything and not be bound because it’s only verbal.

@debbieotoole:  There is usually a mark up you paid intially for the jewler that has nothing to do with materials. If it is a chain store then that markup doesnt translate to real value. He probably just appraised the actual worth of materials which many are sad to find isn’t that high.

Was it from a chain jewelry store? If so, he probably paid more than what the ring was actually worth. You could always get a second opinion if you don’t trust the first appraisal though. Just be prepared to pay for it. I’m in the process of getting a ring appraised as we speak and it cost me $70.
