SithLady:  I went to the DMV and waited for hours – only to find out that I was supposed to go to the SSO first!

vip0802:

I am Canadian.

In Canada, a wife can assume her hubby’s last name or do a legal name change.

Most wives who change their names simply assume their husband’s surname; a legal name change would involve changing the maiden name on the wife’s birth certificate.

Name assumption involves changing ID and that requires a marriage certificate. I had to wait until our marriage was registered which can take up to three months. When I obtained the certificate, I simply brought it to Service Ontario to change my health card and SIN card. (Canadian equivalent of SS)

purrrbaby:  I’m pretty sure you have to appear before a judge to change your first name, but that may vary by state. I thought about doing the same thing, since I’m known by my middle name and never use my first name.

SithLady:  When I went to the BMV, all they asked to see was my old ID and our marriage license–no SS card needed.

vip0802:  I was married in Sept– And I still hav eyet to change my name. In NY I have to take everything down physically (no mail) and My office hours conflict with the SSA and DMV. So I’ll have to wait until after the new year. Unless I am able to take a day off— but no one really wants to do that on their day of. Hopefully I’ll have it changed by 6 mos from our wedding date. That would be nice
