I just went to Jamaica last month. Their #1 financial resource is tourism… You will be fine as long as you remember it is a 3rd world country and you stay with your tour guide. They really cannot afford to lose tourist money, so it is very unlikely you will be attacked/rob unless you go outside of the tourist-safe locations. I agree with PPs about NOLA. That is not the safest place to travel. In reality, are you really safe anywhere?! You don’t live in a protective bubble!

wathenwedding17 :  Lots of good advice already but just thought I’d chime in because I’ve been to 3 of the 4 Couples resorts in Jamaica and they are extremely safe!  We honeymooned at Tower Isle, visited Sans Souci for a day and stayed at Swept Away last year.  You really can’t go wrong with any one of those, seriously!

If you want absolutely amazing food, Tower Isle.  If you want the best beach I’ve ever seen, Swept Away.  If you want absolute tranquility, a nicer beach than Tower Isle and expansive grounds to wander, Sans Souci.  Food was great at all of them, mind you, Tower Isle just stood above in that regard.

Since he’s so worried, I wouldn’t advise leaving the hotel unless as part of a booked tour, but otherwise…. you have nothing to worry about!
