When you buy a ring from JamesAllen, make sure you know the right size. Or you will go through a nightmare experience like we did. We bought the ring 1.5 sizes too large. When we tried to resize the ring locally, jewelers in the area we lived in said that because of the diamonds on the side and significant change in size, the ring would turn out ugly and out-of-shape. They advised us to go back to JamesAllen and ask them for a ring of the actual size, instead of trying to resize the ring we had. So we went back to JamesAllen, because we had a free resize anyway. Turned out that JamesAllen didn’t give us a ring of the right size, but forced the ring we sent back into the size we wanted. And it turned out mishapen and bent as our local jewelers warned us. The ring wasn’t even round, but oval. And because of this, the ring was too loose compared to a ring of the same size but round. JamesAllen offered to take another look at the ring when we expressed our unhappiness. But the Customer Service Rep insisted that the ring is round, that is is “an optical illusion” that it does not appear round “due to the way the light hits it”, and this is “just the way the design is”. JamesAllen’s resizing team sucks, along with its Quality Assurance and Customer Service. We still cannot believe we are expected to accept such an ugly, mishapen and out-of-size ring after spending nearly US$10K on it. The ring looks so bad that it’s not something that can be sold in a brick-and-motar shop, because consumers would reject it on first sight. If you are expecting to give your Fiance/Wife a perfect ring, don’t shop at JamesAllen. You will regret it like we did.
I’ve bought several diamonds and rings from them with no issues at all, even having to send back for sizing and resettings. After having mostly frustrating and subpar experiences with other jewelers I still recommend James Allen.
Apparently, I am not the only one who is unhappy with my ring after it was resized. There are many others who complained of the same issue on Yelp, as well as the low quality of the ring setting:
I hear good things about them, but can’t say how their workmanship is because I’m STILL waiting on mine to arrive. It’s taking longer than they initially said. First it was supposed to ship Jan 8, then it was Jan 9, then the 11th… Now today they said it will be late tonight before it ships (pending quality inspection). And since today is a Friday, it won’t arrive til Monday (that’s IF they even ship it today).
Every day it’s a new story. I’m just getting really impatient. This better damn well be a knockout ring.
Aside from it taking several days longer than they originally said, everything else was fine. We are very pleased with how it turned out. I would recommend JA but just know you may have to wait longer than what they say when your order is placed.
I have a JA ring. The ring is beautiful, the diamond is beautiful. HOWEVER..
Make sure you have the right ring size before you order.
My Fiance ordered a size 6 which was too big for me, so we had it downsized to a 5.5 by JA. It ws scary shipping the ring miles way. When it came back it was still loose so we had the size checked with multiple local jewellers. The local jewellers said it was a 5.75 instead of a 5.5 like we asked them to.
When I contacted James allen they said that the ring was checked before shipping by their ‘quality control personnel’ and found to be a 5.5. I said it obviously wasn’t and they basically shrugged their fingers and said TOO BAD the ring resize is only for one resize, and if I want to send it back, I have to pay for a new resize, shipping and insurance on both sides.
I said FUCK YOU James Allen and got my ring resized again by a local jeweller for less than what James Allen was quoting.
