Has anyone else had a fitting yet, or scheduled one? I’m thinking of doing my first altlerations appointment in the next few weeks. This is my number one worry right now; the dress is definitely WAY too big and needs to be taken in and hemmed, so I’m hoping it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!

@SophieB3: I had my first fitting about two weeks ago – will be going in again beginning of November. My mom was paranoid about the dress not being ready (due to holidays), so I will probably try to have the dress done by mid-December.

@SophieB3: My first fitting is November 2 and the final fitting will probably be the week before our wedding.

@Redholix: Good point about the holidays!
@sparklerunner: That sounds like a good time line.
I’m going to contact a local seamstress this week and set something up in the next couple of weeks!

@SophieB3: My first fitting is tomorrow, and I am both excited and nervous! It sounds like we January brides are all starting fittings at around the same time, give or take a week, which is a relief to know.

I just picked up my wedding gown on Saturday. I was going to wait a while to begin alterations, but started calling around to at least find a good seamstress and ended up with an appointment about 10 days from now.
I’m actually glad to get the fittings started sooner rather than later. I like my dress, but am not madly in love with it, so I promised myslf that I would do everything possible to make it fit me like a dream through alterations. I know this seamstress will have no problem making minor adjustments to account for weight fluctuations right up until the week before the wedding without charging me extra, so there’s really no downside in getting started early.
Plus, I’m glad to get it out of the house, so there’s no temptation or pressure to keep trying it on. I really don’t want to keep trying it on while the fit is still less than flattering. No one needs to see it until it fits me correctly! Plus, when I put it on now, all I do is obsess about all the little adjustments I want to make!

@CPM: I totally understand obsessing about the things that need to be altered! I feel like I’m SWIMMING in my dress; I will have anxiety about it until it fits. That’s great that you have your first fitting soon!
I called a local seamstress today and she said I could come in tomorrow morning! Can’t wait to get this process started.

@CPM: I can totally relate on repeatedly trying on the gown. It’s nice to have it with the seamstress and not even have the option anymore!

Well my dress has been pinned into oblivion and I’m going back for another fitting next Saturday….I’m looking at $500. The lace detailing is making all of these alterations A LOT of work. I’m just trying to remind myself that it is all worth it to have the dress fit like a glove! I did not go to the original bridal store I purchased my gown from as it was in FL and I’m in AL, but the seamstress I went to said although the other store quoted me $350 originally, they likely would have charged double that for all of the work. She is having to cut out every stitch of the lace along the bottom hem, and sew it all back on after hemming it, so I do understand it is a lot of work! I would love to know what you all wind up spending on alterations!

Ok, I need to vent. I’m glad I started this alteration process so early….I’ve been back for 3 fittings and there is still a large, noticeable wrinkle under the lace of my dress on the charmeuse portion. The seamstress is saying it was there before, but it is clearly just too tight through the wasit and hips so it is not laying correctly. I’m really hoping it will be fixed when I go back Friday to pick it up.

@SophieB3: Ugh, this is so stressful. My dress is in Florida, where our wedding will be, and I won’t be down there until Thanksgiving, so… I can’t even start until 11/29. Fortunately I’m not having major alterations, but still, I’m getting nervous!
Good luck on Friday!

$565, ugh. Another place quoted me $500, but they are not as well-reviewed as this seamstress was and might charge additional if extra fittings were needed due to continuing weight loss. Not what I was hoping to hear AT ALL. But I guess I inadvertently purchased the type of dress that is labor-intensive to alter.

@howsweetitis: I considered having my alterations done in FL, where our wedding will be, and where I purchased the dress, but I wound up doing it here just to save myself some stress. I hope your alterations go well! You should have plenty of time! I went back today and the wrinkle in the fabric is gone 🙂 She’s finishing up the hem and the bustle, and I’ll be able to pick it up next Friday.
@CPM: That is pricey, and about what I’m paying : I keep telling myself it is worth it because it will fit perfectly, but $500 in alterations was hard to stomach at first. I LOVE lace….but I should have known it would be expensive!

@SophieB3: Yeah. If I had known how much more expensive lace dresses can be to alter, I might have chosen differently! Too late now. At least I feel confident my dress will fit perfectly.

I haven’t even sought alterations yet, eeep. Luckily I shouldn’t have much to do. It fits pretty great. i need a bustle, but besides that, I don’t think there will be much. I need to pick up the bra I will wear, then I will call around for alterations.
