Ok, so, my fiance and I picked out a ring just before getting engaged, but we weren’t financially ready to purchase a center diamond. The ring is a halo style, so we ordered the ring with a cz in the center for the time being.
The CZ on the floor model was about .5 carat, and looked modest and believable as real. However, the ring that we got had a cz of 1.5 carats, which in my opinion, was not believable at all for my fiance and me to be able to afford. I was nervous about showing everyone a giant ring and then a few months later, after having the real diamond, have a much smaller center stone. The whole point was to have a place holder that nobody would notice a difference with.
So after a while talking about it, we just decided we should purchase the diamond, so I could show all of my family and friends the ring and not feel weird about it. We went and purchased a 1 carat diamond from a well known jeweler and had them set the new diamond in the ring.
When we got the ring back a few hours later it was awful! The diamond sat up so tall in the ring that my fiance said it looked like a top hat. Not to mention, they had replaced the four simple prongs with a huge claw-like 6 prongs.
We went back into the store and expressed to them that we were not happy with how it turned out and wanted the ring to be ilke the original design. The manager told me that they didn’t have the technology to do it without damaging the halo, and they would have to send it to another location which uses laser technology to set diamonds. I said ok, and he told me it’d be about 2 weeks until I got my ring back.
So the next day my fiance and I called the jeweler to tell them that we’d rather just have the ring back as is and try to send it back to the original designer, but the manager told us that he’d already started working on it, and he thought he could do exactly what we wanted and have it done by the end of the day.
So I went at the end of the day to pick up the ring, and it was set in four prongs but still higher than the original design. I was happy enough with it, and I left the store.
Upon returning home and taking off the ring to examine it, I noticed that the bottom of the ring (the underside of the mounting) was smoldered. Where there was once a beautiful leaf design in a shiny white gold, there is now a smoldered, melted, and dull mess of metal. Where the prongs are connected, there is also what appears to be sloppy work with metal spilling over onto some of the diamonds in the halo.
This ring was designed for the center stone to sit almost flush with the halo, but the manager told me it’s as low as they could get it, and I can still see clear under the diamond. I don’t understand how this is true when there are diamonds that sit flush with halos all over the place.
I’m having an awful experience, and have shed tears over what has become of my gorgeous ring. It doesn’t seem to shine as it did before, and at this point I’m scared to have any further work done on it.
